Trying to figure out where I'm headed

So this weekend I did a lot shopping, but not buying. At the YLF meet-up I didn't buy anything. Though Jenava and I were trying on things after the group disbanded.
I tried on these

Neither was quite right.

Today I went shopping with a friend. I found these for $65 at the Rack

But didn't pull the trigger. I did find a Chantelle bra at the Rack, less than $30 with tax.

I guess I'm trying to figure out where I'm headed next and it's not entirely clear at the moment. Also I noticed a major lack of interesting shoes and boots with a low heel. Now I know how Angie feels.

Maybe you are entering an "analysis" phase. I'm sure you know a lot more about style and fashion than I do, but I don't think you can go wrong by just window shopping, trying on and ruminating on this for a while. You certainly can't make any mistakes by not buying while you consider where you want to go next!

I hear ya on the low heeled shoes....

I'm not sure where you're headed either, but I've been loving your outfits more and more. They seem calmer and more sophisticated and more coherent, even though you are every bit as trend-setting and individual in terms of what you're wearing and how you're putting it together. Somehow YOU seem to be coming through more. I notice Anna, not just an original outfit. It's tough to explain, but from the outside looking in it seems like a really positive development.

Interesting footwear with lower heels is so elusive. It is so easy to design cool shoes with high heels, I think designers should take the challenge on designing cool shoes with lower heels for a change...

Perhaps you are at the ever-rare, sit-back-and-revel-in-your-own-awesomeness phase? Because I agree; you've been hitting 'em out of the park lately. Perfect closet equilibrium.

How do you feel about your latest outfits? Do you feel as though something's missing or off? Some element you need to bring in to feel more you?

I'm in complete agreement with Suz and Sveta - you seem to be developing in your style and I know the footwear change was not something you chose to do rather than it was thrust on you, but maybe it's pushing you in a new and different direction. Window shopping while you're figuring it out makes perfect sense to me.

I can only echo what others have already said. Your outfits lately are really great and your personality just shines through. Perhaps you're in a phase where a lot of change isn't necessary. Just enjoy your wardrobe as much as you can...play around with what's in there and see if you can come up with new combinations, but just for fun. Window shopping is great fun too and perhaps something will leap out at you as the seasons change and new styles start filling up the stores.

Hmm...did you ever do the "style statement" thing? You always seem very confident with your style choices - it's interesting that you're having a moment with doubting yourself. Don't worry - I'm sure the 'misses' you tried on today just weren't right, but I've seen you pick out plenty of items that are really fab and unique. Keep trusting your own instincts!

Wow, Anna - I'm fascinated to see where this goes. I know you proudly wear the crown of Team Edgy, among many others... are you thinking of changing it up a bit? What's interesting is that allthough I always know an Anna item when I see it on you, I'm still not sure I could shop for you in my head, as I could for others here.

I look to you to model anything new and cutting edge, but maybe that is getting tiresome or stale for you? Or is it something else? Are you looking for a new direction, or more narrowing down of your choices?

And sorry if I'm getting off track or too personal - you're one of my style idols here and I'd love to see where you're headed if you're off in a new direction.

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. I think part of the problem is that we're already into the long dark Seattle winter. All the new stuff in stores is Resort. The stuff that is on sale right now from Fall/Winter but I'm not thrilled by it enough to buy it. I am also trying to more judicious in my purchases. I'm wondering if I should frequent more fast- fashion outlets for a cheap fix. I don't wear my clothes enough in my off days for them to wear out.
I also know that I'm definitely feeling limited by my footwear options at the moment.
Maybe I should not necessarily do a strict SYC, but only bring something new in if it really sings to me.
I have plenty to ponder.

Anna, judging by what you recently purged, you've actually been on the next leg of your style journey without us knowing it! I think you are set for a while in the clothing and accessory department because you've already played to your new style sensibilities. Footwear on the other hand is a whole new area to ponder because of your recent footwear challenges (related to your hip and back pain). THAT is where I would focus next.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I think what's out there in the stores now is very drab. Recession fashion for the recession. I feel like you have to take things home and make something of them.

This is very exciting, Anna! I have noticed that you have embraced color a bit more lately (say, in the last 6 months or so), which is a big shift for you, and now you are dealing with the footwear/back/hips situation, so it makes sense that you might want to pause for a little bit. I love Rita's idea of "hugging your closet" right now! It also makes sense that you might want to try more experimental stuff at lower prices (e.g., Zara or places like that?), especially given your limited non-hospital time.
