Every year, for the past 10 years, an owl has spent the fall and winter in a tree in my backyard. He/She starts to hoot like clockwork, every evening before sunset and stops again just after the sun rises. Once the owl arrives, my trees have started to turn colors, the mornings are cool and brisk, and I feel Fall has truly arrived.

This year, there seem to be two owls because I can hear my friend, and a neighbor who answers back!

I sometimes see the owl on the tree in the evening, but not too often, his hiding place is well hidden, and requires binoculars and patience.

I find the owls hoots strangely comforting and look forward to hearing them every year.

Do you have signs you watch for that let you know it’s a new season other than the calendar date?
