Truck driving me?

I’m excited to get the final bits of my stuff back from Florida! I could have it brought up here by next week or I could fly to Florida, rent a truck, spend an afternoon at the beach, hit up some secondhand furniture shops (they are not set designers’ shops, but they are amazing, because of all the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th….homes some truly wealthy individuals have in the area*), drive back here and come out ahead financially.

Which will you pick? Being in FL sounds fun. Have you driven a truck before? What about the weather/driving conditions?

BD, I just drove the same size U-haul down from my parents’ 5 hours away. When my son was 3, we took a much bigger one, towing an Accord behind it, from coastal Georgia to the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle.

Given the recent storms in the south, I really should keep an eye on the weather.

I just drove down the coast to Miami, and things I note:

- Florida drivers are crazy
- Florida is a looong drive north to south
- I-95 is awful, and I much prefer secondary highways but it takes a lot longer that way.

So, if you do that, I wish you well! It’s cold in Miami today — the temp dropped like crazy last night! Hubs had to buy a jacket last minute because he didn’t check the forecast before he packed.

I have heard of discounts on trucks for returning trucks to a heavy need area. You could check to see if any trucks need to be returned in either of your directions.

Nikki, I’ve heard of repositioning, have no idea how to find those deals. Do you?

Janet, during the 8 years we lived in Tampa, I said many times that we were going to go to Miami, but then never made it. The long drive was generally a contributing factor.

I nearly said that the cold is good for me because I only have winter clothes. Then I remembered that cache of summer things I forgot in a hotel drawer last fall. Jenn pointed out that it was a pretty neat little travel capsule. Guess I’ll put that to the test!

I only knew someone that used insider information for a deal. I guess you could ask if there are any repositioning deals available in an area.

Decorating indeed! I just spent nearly $300 on coat hooks, blinds, & a rug. Yikes!

The schedule is firming up. I’ve booked a flight, an SUV, the first two nights at hotels, and a 12’ truck with cruise control and a ramp, all for less than it would have cost to have them bring it up. I fly into the SE part of the state, visit a couple consignment/used furniture stores & a boutique hotel, drive across the state to get my moving truck and drive home. What I get out of it is spa treatments, yoga on the beach, and a swim in the ocean, all at my favorite hotel, plus the chance to visit some fab secondhand furniture stores.

I’d still appreciate names of high-end consignment or secondhand furniture stores on the East Coast of Florida, from Jupiter to Miami.
