trenchcoat questions

I'm gearing up to get myself a trenchcoat and wondered if a hood and belt are essential. The one I'm leaning towards has neither. I never wear hoods and would grab an umbrella if I really needed one. And while I like the look of a belt, I think it would be a pain to deal with all the time. But what's fashionable?

I think a trenchcoat without a hood and belt would be even more aesthetically pleasing to my eye than those with. If you'll always have an umbrella, why would you need a hood? And a belt is just one more fussy thing to mess with. I prefer jackets and coats without belts, no exceptions.

I vote belt on the trench. It really finishes off the look.

I would skip the hood, but look for one with a belt. If you don't like tying the belt, you could (artfully) tie it around the back of the coat to keep it in place, it adds a little interest to the back of the coat at the waist, and if you decided you wanted a belt, you'd have it for later. Plus, I thought having a belt was one of the things that made a "trench coat" a trench ? Am I wrong about this???

I don't know, but I appreciate you bumping this thread. I was about to go looking for it. LOL

If I really need a belt for it to look good, I'm willing to wait to find one. I know I want single-breasted. The trouble is finding one that doesn't cost a ton.

I would pass on any with a hood and would wait for a great one that has a belt....I really prefer the single-breasted trenches too! You might have luck at the clearance sales or eBay....I got a gorgeous grey trench from Banana Republic, now Im too freakin' fat to wear it! aagghh....

Hmmm... I might cave on the double-breasted part. I just found a great one in a color that would be perfect.

My question: how long a period of time would you wear the coat for? Do you do quick trips in and out, which would require you do tie and untie a belt over and over? Or are your outings more prolonged, in which case the belt would stay tied most of the time?

Hmmm.... I get in and out of the car, but usually in bad weather I end up wearing my coat/jacket the whole time I'm out unless I'm at someone's house or in church. So I probably wouldn't have to tie/untie that often.

I'm a fan of belts on coats because it let's you cinch the waist. This is also why I am not a fan of hoods, my crossbody bags get caught on the hood when I take the bag off.
