Trench coats revisited - YouLookFab Forum

Hi all,

You might remember (or not!) that I have been trying to replace a very beloved Club Monaco trench for fall.

I thought I had found a winner with their "Janney" style this season, but a few of you pointed out that the S looked small on me. I tried the M, which was too big. Ultimately, the biggest problem about the design was that when I stuck my hands in my pockets, the sides gapped, thanks to the button-up detail on the side. One of those features that looks great, but doesn't work well in practice. I sent them back!

I happened to find an old season CM version with leather sleeves for sale on the cheap via Tradesy (a 2013 release *I think* and in perfect shape). While it's not quite a classic as the original I'm replacing because of the leather sleeves, the quality is excellent (not true of all of their releases this year) and I think the fit is good. I am not entirely sure about the visual line of the sleeves, but I think it will work well with black and other more substantial footwear in fall-early spring (i.e. not bare feet - haha!).

It was quite inexpensive ($65) and it fits, so I'm inclined to keep it, but please let me know what you think!

A coat has got to close. That’s the point so that you have the option! Are you wearing the right layers underneath? Looks like a blouse. How about knitwear? So far, so good.

I’ll have to do a proper styling session and repost! No half measures

Angie is a tough taskmaster :-).
I think it looks a touch snug through the hips but with a double breasted style you can probably move the buttons over a bit ( if you wanted to ). What a stroke of luck to find it!

I'm not inclined to wear a trench with thick knits (at that point in the season, I'm wearing a wool coat), but I do wear one over a blazer frequently, almost always with slim jeans. Here it is styled with my go-to Regent blazer and 9" skinnies from J Crew. To my eye, the fit is almost *better*, because the blazer gives the shoulder some structure.

I'm planning to try the Saskia from Hobbs that I know is such a hit with fabbers when I get to the UK later in the fall, so this piece just needs to be a reliable stand by until I can properly updgrade. Hoping it does the trick!

I like the new trench but wonder what rain will do to those leather sleeves. Will the black fade onto the tan parts? Will the leather get stiff?

If it fits over a blazer then I’d say it's fine. More than fine - it looks great. I expect you’ll take an umbrella to the UK anyway, so the sleeves should be okay.

Looks great, but with Joy in asking about leather sleeves in the rain - but I guess some weather proofing spray and you are good to go.

I love the style - but it does seem very fitted , but if you don’t mind such a close -fitting coat and have all the ease you need , then go for it !

It looks great. To me it's a fun addition to a wardrobe. Does the black limit it for you or will it go with your entire wardrobe? Or are you planning on adding another trench?

I love it and like it better than your old trench. But I’ll defer to Angie on fit. As others have said, you could move the buttons.

I really like it! The leather sleeves are great! It is different from a classic traditional one, so why not having both (when you buy a new one in England). I think this one is too fun to pas and you look great in it.
If you would find it tight - move the buttons a bit.

I love the original trench and this one works well, too. The dark sleeves are a bit different but if you like it then you should keep it.

You can adjust the positions of the last buttons on the hips no problem. Easy alteration. With light layers, you are in business here - be SURE that's how you wear it! If so, ENJOY.

I wear my own trench coats roomier so that I have the option for layers. I have a sweatshirt under this trench coat. Also, I'm urban and on foot all the time. So I need roomy movement to carry stuff, walk fast and walk Sam, IYKWIM. Here's my new ink trench coat.

Looks like a great trench coat. The leather sleeves add something different. Like Angie, I layer up under my trench coat and prefer it to be roomy but that is me. Great find.

I’ll look into moving the buttons a smidge esp. below the waist: hadn’t thought of that myself.

Looks great-keep! My only worry is that the black makes it more limited. I'd feel the need to always have black or other dark color pants or shoes to ground it.
