Trench coat help

I don't know how I've lived in Seattle without a trench coat for the past few years, but I have, and I've vowed not to let another winter go by without one. So... does anyone have suggestions for one that could work for smart casual and dressier?

I am not clear on the 'smart casual' aspect, but I've had my eye on this one particular trench:

I'd go for the 'royalty' colour - ie. purple. Just for a bit of punch beyond the usual black or navy.

That said, I came across a very similar coat on Overstock (50% off)....almost identical:

I was eyeing the navy, but what stopped me was the description as a 'spring' coat - plus I noticed that the coat on Overstock was a cotton blend, whereas the Nordstrom sateen version had no cotton. I was visualizing 'more wrinkles' with the Overstock version.

But - check out the nice buttons on the cuff of that Overstock navy blue one - cute!

I was pretty tempted to order the navy one on Overstock today - but then got stopped by the fact that it wasn't quite the same as the Nordstrom one that I really liked. I was concerned about 'spring' and ...'cotton'.

Personally - I think the Tahari "Lola" Sateen coat in the 'royalty' colour as featured on the Nordstrom site is a really nice trench coat. The colour's a wee bit unusual, which I like - plus I can see it being both dressy and casual.

Also, trenches are for Autumn and Spring, wool coats are for Winter.

Thanks, velvetychocolate- I love the Tahari, but more than I can spend right now. Overstock has some nice options- I'm going to keep checking with them.

Angie, my last trench had a heavy zip out lining that worked great for winter when we have those endless rainy days. But if it's a fashion faux pas, I won't wear it in winter. And I'll definitely check out the Rack.

Oh, Sinead! It's not a faux pas :0). It's just not often that trenches have zip out linings. Nothing keeps you warmer than heavy wool (or a quilted, long puffer). People forget how cold it gets in Seattle!

Sinead, I have lived here for about 36 years and have just bought my first trench. I just didn't think about how useful a trench would be as a transitional piece. I thought trench coats were for Privat Investigaters! I am from southern CA and I would not consider myself a coat expert, having never owned a coat while living down there. I think I have always been in denial about how important a coat wardrobe is for us here in the Pacific Northwest. It feels great to go out of the house properly protected from the elements and looking good too. Before, I was more of a "run to the car" type in cold weather. I hope you find a trench that you love. Do you know what color you want? Do you want a belt or a double breasted look?
There is a Kors trench in the latest Nordstrom's catalogue that is gorgeous, but around $300. I know you can do better than that. Maybe it will go on sale.

San, I know what you mean about the coat wardrobe. I grew up in Texas and I think I've also suffered from "coat denial". I try to get through the winter with one measly wool coat and a parka and I've come to realize how truly boring that is. Last winter I ended up layering sweaters for all but the coldest weather because I just couldn't face putting on that coat one more day. So, I'm determined to get a trench coat and, then, if at all possible, a new wool coat. (Also boots, but one thing at a time) Oh, I have come across some Kors coats at the discounters- just not trenches in my size. But I'm going to keep looking.

Inge, a Soia and Kyo coat was on ebay that I almost went for- but it was white (I think Tanya has it-gorgeous on her) but I wasn't sure white would look good on me (brunette, pale skin) I feel like I need to try some more on. I've tried the classic khaki, double-breasted, tabs, belted style... and it was too much for me. I have narrow shoulders, small chest and it looked like a lot going on for my size, lots of fabric. So I think I'm going to look for a simpler design. Love so many of those on the Revolve site... thanks for the links.

I have a Michael Kors trench from last year with removable lining, that I like a lot. It is double-breasted, but there was also a single-breasted style avaialble. There were quite a few trenches at the Rack when I was there last time, but usually the color selection is not great there - mostly black.
Have you looked at Gallery trenches at Nordstrom? They often have removable lining too, like this one:

Marianne, that trench in that color- that's the one I want. Simple design, perfect length- I think it was on sale during the NAS, but unfortunately, still out of my price range.

I will be stalking it on the web.... thanks for reminding me about it.

What size do you usually wear, Sinead? This trench runs big. It is a beautiful garment though. I have a few clients running around in those. Gallery comes out with one every year. It was on offer at the NAS.

Angie, I usually wear a small. I'll stop by Nordstrom this week and try it on- hope I don't have to go to an XS because those are so hard to find.
