Trench coat alternatives.

I need a new raincoat but really do not like trench coats. I know, they are classic, will go with anything , and are supposed to be figure enhancing. But, I do not like them. So, what are my alternatives? I am open to all suggestions. I live in the Sacramento area so do not need one for the super cold, just the rain.

Years ago I had a London Fog raincoat that wasn't a trench coat. It had a zip out liner, a removable hood, and was single breasted with a belt that tied. It fit over suit jackets. I loved that coat, and regret getting rid of it.

I don't like trenches either -- they always have a belt that hits me at the wrong spot and are have too many buttons and flaps going on. I have two Land's End rain coats for 50+ degree weather. One in a traditional khaki color but it is a swing coat that both zips and snaps with an envelope collar. The other coat is in in a bright brick red with princess seams and single breasted. I love these coats because they are reasonably priced (under $100) and well made. Additionally I love the interior breast pockets on both coats (I think this is one of their staple design features). I am not sure they are still offering them on their site.

Day Vies, I will check on the Lands End site. Thanks for the info, the Swing coat sound like something I would like.

Annagybe, I am not sure about a parka. Whatever I get needs to go over my business attire and casual clothes. I may have to go and try som on.

JAileen, I hate it when I get rid of something and kick myself for years after. I sympathize.

I agree with you, traditional trench styling is not flattering on me and any coats with belts drive me nutty. There are a lot of choices labeled raincoat or trench that aren't actually trenches. Eddie Bauer has some nice ones, Lands' End and LL Bean always have the classics. Department stores seem to vary in when they have coats in stock, although if you're in Sacramento right now might be a good time to look. I've seen some nice ones at Nordstrom.

You could try a sleeveless trench...it's a modern twist on a classic. Not necessarily the most practical, but perhaps it's worth a try?

Trench coats do not need to be styled in a classically "Burberry- esque", btw. Styles often come sans the belt and with all sorts of different design details.

I have an A-line jacket that hits just below the bum that might be a style that would work. Something like this but in a waterproof fabric.

There are also some nice cropped double breasted styles that could work depending on your shape.

OMG, I just saw a woman in the store wearing a bright red trench with a bubble hem. It was so adorable I practically squealed.
