Lisa, I agree. I would bet this was a mob mentality kind of thing. The pictures were of a massive group grabbing the dolphin. I would have been the crazy person screaming to put it back in the water. It's the same people who grab onto sea turtles to "ride" them or tape their dog's muzzles closed as punishment for barking. It breaks my heart.
I don't know that our culture has all that much respect for animals either, in the big picture.
Where does compassion come from? To counter this is the story of the Costa Rican fisherman who saved a crocodile with a gunshot wound and maintained a "friendship" with it for 20 years until it died. It was old when he rescued it, so it's not even like he raised it from infancy. People thought he'd get eaten but that never happened.
If a crocodile can have such a bond, and a man of little means or formal education can have this innate goodness of heart, why can't everyone be so kind?
