You are sweet to have warned us, I won't be looking up the article, that's enough for me.
These things really are traumatizing. On one level I feel like it's my responsibility to know about these stories so I can be part of the wave that pushes back, on the other hand, they make me despair, and lose my hope that people are fundamentally good.

I wish I was there to hug you and commiserate. I feel this way too. When I use a joking phrase of frustration " I hate people" - sometimes I honestly mean it. There seem to be so many uneducated, self-serving, non-compassionate people out there who don't think about the world in the bigger picture- it's all about themselves. I almost was in tears yesterday over a posting about how pigs are "farmed" in tight-fitting cages in certain countries other than Canada - I know this is off-topic - but this is another situation about how animals are treated. This is why I can no longer eat meat that isn't locally farmed properly , and this is why I hate people. I guess we have to accept that maybe their culture - whatever it is- doesn't have the same respect for living things that we do. But to pull a baby dolphin out of the water to take pictures with it? That should be a criminal offence.

Lisa, I agree. I would bet this was a mob mentality kind of thing. The pictures were of a massive group grabbing the dolphin. I would have been the crazy person screaming to put it back in the water. It's the same people who grab onto sea turtles to "ride" them or tape their dog's muzzles closed as punishment for barking. It breaks my heart.
I don't know that our culture has all that much respect for animals either, in the big picture.

Where does compassion come from? To counter this is the story of the Costa Rican fisherman who saved a crocodile with a gunshot wound and maintained a "friendship" with it for 20 years until it died. It was old when he rescued it, so it's not even like he raised it from infancy. People thought he'd get eaten but that never happened.

If a crocodile can have such a bond, and a man of little means or formal education can have this innate goodness of heart, why can't everyone be so kind?

Oh, Una. I cry about these types of stories regularly too. I am absolutely inconsolable at times - although Sam does his best to console me. I am ashamed to be human at times too. Animals - especially dogs and horses - are so much better than humans.

Thanks for the note about the man who saved the crocodile. That was heart lifting. We need more heart lifting stories about humans and animals. Perhaps start another thread about that.

I don't understand these stories at all. I really want to always have faith in people and to believe they are capable of the best thinking and judgement. And I am willing to cut individuals a lot of slack for poor judgement based on really difficult, challenging circumstances. But pure cruelty toward the innocent -- animals, children, the elderly -- I will never understand. It doesn't anger me as much as it saddens me so so deeply, to my innermost core. People who are capable of that kind of act are just beyond my comprehension.

I can not imagine what kind of person(s) could/would do this! I guess people put themselves on a different level than animals. I think that all life is precious and every precaution should be taken to preserve and respect life.

Lara hit the nail on the head, Una. To some people, animals are on a MUCH lower level to humans - to the extent that they actually believe that they don't feel pain, or that it doesn't matter if they do. I don't get that mentality because it goes against the very core of my being - I put many animals on a pedestal and above humans - but the world is unfortunately full of people who think quite the opposite.

I read about this horrible incident earlier today. It broke my heart. You are right. Where is our compassion? I believe that we are, as humans, called to be good stewards of this planet -- which includes compassionate treatment of animals. Like LACeleste, I worry about the narcissism I see in our culture. I do not understand how capturing the perfect "selfie" is so darned important -- and the life of an innocent creature is of less importance. Thanks for including the link to the story about the man who saved a crocodile. It gives me hope. By the way, your fur babies are beautiful. I am the proud mom of a big floofy rescue cat… 20 pounds of pure love and joy! (I think she's the one who "rescued" me.)

Oh no. Totally hear you. Perhaps it's even more disturbing, in a way, that these people were not intending for the dolphin to die...but were such thoughtless, narcissistic idiots. Selfies?? WTF.

The Cecil the Lion story is one that comes to mind that brought me to tears.

Well, I don't think of animals on the same level as humans, but that doesn't mean I condone cruelty or thoughtlessness. In fact, just the opposite - we are thinking beings, so we should be thoughtful about our actions, especially to other creatures that we have power/control over. Just to provide a different point of view...

I'm pretty sure I follow more animal rescues or animal "personalities" than people on social media. The rescue stories can be heartbreaking, but I appreciate they also present the stories of people DOING something to counter the evil in the world.

Events like this a reminder to be aware of how we can influence one another for good or evil, as well as a call to make a daily practice of kindness and humility. We reinforce what we "practice," and what we watch and read, and the input from the people we bring into our circle, are all a part of reinforcing what is best in us.....or what is worst.

The fact that this horrible thing hurt you deeply is a sign that your conscience is still soft -- a good, if painful, thing.

That story upset me all day today, too, to the extent I was avoiding current events sites so I wouldn't have to see it again. I am horribly upset by learning of ways that humans are terrible to animals. I fell like we have a greater duty to these innocent species. My husband always tells me that I don't feel enough sympathy to e.g., refugee children. I don't lack empathy to anyone yet somehow the animal stories freak me out more than anything and I don't know why.

However, I was thinkng about a friend I made recently from my hometown in Saudi Arabia. She's American and I disagree hugely with most of her political views. Yet she spends a vast amount of her free time rescuing stray and abused animals, raising money for them via yard sales and so on, and it made me feel a little better about humankind to know that she arranged treatment for a paralyzed dog, got her a back end wheelchair, and is personally escorting her to a new home in Texas next week. And she does that sort of thing all the time.

Oh how sad! I can't stand cruelty to animals and children. There is something so sickening about hearing of people inflicting pain on helpless ones... I'm so sorry you carried this burden today. I hope your furry babies brought comfort when you came home! They are ADORABLE but the way.
