Here's the topper lab I promised.
1-3 Brown sweater on it's own has a neckline in my comfort zone. It's very plain, but super easy with toppers. Tops with moderate scoop like this, but less plain, would be winners all round.

4-7 Purple deep scoop blouse. Sooo bare, even with a necklace. Works with topper (whole outfit bought together years ago) and feels covered enough. Add scarf- warmer, but wow thats ALGO, especially with a mask. Add coat...well maybe less chaotic looking than scarf plus sweater on their own? Soooo muuuch faaabric :/

Brown sweater looks good in all the iterations. As for the purple blouse, to my eye it does not look too bare in any version. I like it both with the necklace and the scarf. I actually quite like the whole outfit in #5.

What comes to my mind is that one person's ALGO is another person's "just right." I think the versions with the necklace and scarf look terrific.

I am not a fan of those scoop necklines although I have a few, Really like 5 6 and 7.

I have the same observation Janet does--nothing about these says ALGO or "so much fabric" to me. I'd wear the necklace and scarf versions with zero hesitation. In fact, I wear the long cardigan + scarf combo quite often in the fall.

But if it feels bad for you . . . then there's your answer. Layers like this might just be something you don't want to wear and never will want to, and so you just look for tops that are warm enough or interesting enough not to need a topper.

I agree with Janet. I think the third piece outfits look polished, not over the top.

Agree with Janet! The looks with the scarf and necklace look best to my eye. Polished, punchy, and finished.

Rest assured, it ALL works well though

3>2>1. I like the long cardis in the last few looks.

Crew necks & mockTs make a way simpler, smoother look than scoopnecks.

Thanks all! I'm going to do a lab with other necklines too- but high ones in winter, especially with a topper, make me feel like a big box on legs. They're fine in summer with bare arms.

Was thinking I might feel more ok with layers if less colors per outfit- 2 instead of 3 +.

I don't see the purple top as "too bare" on you (though I might be cold like that) and I love the versions with necklace and scarf!

And you might be onto something with the colours.

The other thing is that living in a predominantly hot and humid climate, your eye gets used to the absence of layers (since they are impractical much of the year). But in F/W, layers are the way to go from a practicality standpoint. Your eye may need some adjustment as the seasons transition?

For the high necklines looks, how about a fitted crewneck or mock T under something long & flowing, like in the last couple pix here? Not tight—that’s uncomfortable!— but fitted enough to show your curves.

It looks good, the ALGO, but I get that it’s a fuss with so many pieces. *Sigh.* You should see me at work doing Mr Rogers… on and off with the coat, sweater and hat all day… lol! Argh!

I like the ones with the purple scoop neck top. I agree it looks better with the long cardigans and the scarfs but I also like it by itself.

Exactly Rachy! Sometimes it's warmer, sometimes it's colder- topper on, topper off all day...

“Topper on, topper off” is a small part of why I don’t like scarves. It’s simple enough to add or remove one piece, but if that starts a cascade of other adjustments I have to make, I’m lost. That’s just not going to happen.
