Too gape-y?

Is this too gape-y?

This lovely shirt from Suz (still in great condition) is a wonderful fit and colour - but there is a slight gape in the lower part of my bust.

So far I've only worn it with a scarf or dress over it, but this morning thought - maybe it isn't so bad by itself.

What are your thoughts?.

Lovely colour.Doesnt look too bad in the photos but if it’s bothering you why not put a little stud fastener at that point between the buttons to prevent the gape?

I hear you cardiff girl. I haven't had a lot of success with studs in the past though - maybe they weren't strong enough but they would just undo a lot!

Give a stitch. Of course then you will wear the shirt slipping it from the head.

i'd try adding a tank/camisole underneath and unbutton one more button.

I would simply pin it for the day (invisible done from backwards) though it requires some skills:-)

I use double sided fashion tape to fix small issues like that. It's temporary but since you don't always wear it alone, that might be fine.

I would try fashion tape if you can find it, but personally I get too annoyed with shirts that do this and end up getting rid of them. Maybe your tolerance level is higher than mine.

Angie - no - it looks like that without the jacket.

This isn't the first time I've had gaping in this spot. The pussy bow blouse I've recently worn out had it too but the bow covered it.

What do you think of the moving button solution?

I have done the stitch it and pull it over my head thing. It works well, but test it with a pin first to make sure it is doable.

I've found fashion tape in the notions section of a fabric store.

However, the tape I've found isn't nearly sticky enough to hold a gap like this closed -- the fabric is pulling hard. I'd have to sew that closed. So my answer to your question is, yes, this is too gape-y.

I have sometimes let out the side seam a bit, but then it gets wider over all.

Another thought: In my experience, when a button front gapes this much when you're standing still taking a photo, it's even worse when you move around in a typical day's activities. My test is to put my hands on my hips, or pick up something the size of a shoe box with both hands and lift it up onto a shelf at about eye level. What happens then? Does the shirt fall back in place? Or does it stay gapped? If you're always tugging and adjusting after every move, that's only a recipe for annoyance.

You may be able to let out the side seam from the underarm down about 6-8 inches and gain that extra inch or so right where you need it.

Yes, too gape-y. Try moving the button. If that doesn't solve the problem I have no better advice than letting the shirt go and buy a bigger one instead. Janet's tips sound useful.

Thanks guys. I think I'm just going to revert to having this as a layering blouse! I have had this same problem on blouses that are much looser so not confident it wouldn't happen even if I could let out the side seam (I don't think I could) and I am not really sure about that moving the button.
I'm not really in a "button down" strange at the moment, though this one is beautiful, so I think I'm happy to just leave it for occasional outfits underneath things.
