Tonal Outfit: Burgundy - YouLookFab Forum

The whole "tonal outfits" idea really appeals to me so I'm going to try a few. This one is various shades of burgundy.

- Macys/Charter Club corduroy pants
- Tjmax/Tahari ribbed pullover
- Naturalizer Morrison 2 suede sneakers
- London Fog Puffer Coat
- Coach Outlet bag and wallet in a dark brown/black print. (the finds don't match but the items do!) The burgundy bag I own is a beautiful bag but very stiff leather (awkward to use) so I'm looking for a replacement. It would probably be too much burgundy for me to add such a bag to this outfit so I went with brown/black print

- Scarf in burgundy, brown and other colors

The colors are not terribly clear in the photos (or the finds). The pants and sweater are a more reddish version of burgundy, as are the sneakers, and the puffer is more of a purply/berry color. The pants/sweater outfit by itself is a bit boring but I knew I'd be wearing a coat and scarf with it.

I'm not totally sold on the berry puffer against the dark red pants/shoes - I wish the colors were tonally closer. I do really like brown with the dark red flavor of burgundy.

It's a great look - love all those berry/burgundy colors on you! You have great pieces to play with while making tonal outfit - the scarf is perfect and ties all of it nicely together!
I'm thinking that we all could do a brighter shade of lipgloss for those tonal outfits - lol ( or maybe it's just me wishing for brighter smiles during Holiday time ).

Thanks slim cat - yeah a brighter shade of lip is a good idea. I'm due for a lip product refresh and will keep that in mind.

Thanks Firecracker! The nails matching the outfit is sort of accidental but not really because I've been in a "wear red" mood lately , and not just because it's a traditional Christmas color.

I guess the common theme here is that I ought to relax my notion of what related colors work together ... that's one of the points of the tonal outfit concept, isn't it

I love this on you and think it works extremely well! Really like it with the coat. And the scarf does a great job of bringing it all together.

I hear you on the challenges of photographing the tones. I have found that (with my not-great lighting situation) it is just as hard to show the details and variations of tone as it is when trying to photograph black or ink outfits! Oh well....we do our best.

I like it all Chris - I think it works brilliantly!

Colour combining is an art - I remember my Mum telling me that red and pink did not go together - I love it now! She was however big on blue and green (peacock type colours) and black and brown together, I can find it hard with greens (warm and cool toned for example) and also especially greys. I think experimenting is a fun way to work out what you like and feel your best in especially on low stakes days (at home, errands etc).

Totally works to my eye, the puffer looks great with it all and the scarf adds a nice final touch. I like that they aren’t exactly the same colour tone, I find it creates more depth and interest.

Totally works and I think you look fabulous.

Hard to be sure with photos but it looks like the bag has a green undertone (some browns do). I think that works well with burgundy and with the colours of your scarf. Another option might be a tan coloured bag to pick up the colour of your hair and the soles of your shoes.

Sal, yes it certainly is an art. And everyone has different views on it. I don't follow other people's rules nor what the "current fashion" advice is ... but I do follow my own, and those change over time

Dee - interesting point. I guess that's one of the big pluses of tonal dressing.

Thanks Brooklyn ... the bag has no green undertone that I can see. Good suggestion about the tan bag to go with the sneaker soles. I have an older Vince Camuto I haven't used since Covid that would be perfect, or my lighter pompom london one but it's a bit too small to use in winter where I need to stash my gloves and don't trust coat pockets.
