My fashion thought for today: In times of old, people would argue what made humans different from the rest of the animal kingdom... intelligence, language, tool making, etc. But the answer has got to be clothes, right? Makes a person rethink the story of Adam and Eve.

Awesome article Rachy! I was a massive fan of Jean Auel's " Earth's Children" series ( The Clan of the Cave Bear etc) and have read all the books more than once, I own them all still. This article takes me right back to that and is fascinating. I know DNA studies show some Neanderthal genes in many people. I even like the bit about the lice! Thank you for enriching my education.

Rachy, I have Neanderthal genes, too! I have more than most, according to the report. No unibrow, though. It shouldn’t have been a surprise since I’m part German. My Neanderthal genes would make me shorter than otherwise. Since I’m 5’6”, I assume my Scandinavian genes offset the Neanderthal. The Scandinavian was a surprise, but the Vikings did invade Great Britain centuries ago!

Hey! Is there a German/Neanderthal connection? Is that how we got those genes? Lol. I’m going to have to speak to my brother about this. He will have pontifications, I’ve no doubt.

Neanderthals are named after the valley in Germany where the first Neanderthal specimen was found.

Good article. I keep trying to explain to DH that clothing is fundamentally cultural, not just practical, and that's why it's okay to put some effort and thought into getting dressed. Not sure he's convinced.

Side thought: I always wonder how domestic dogs evaluate each others' appearance. Since they're being bred and groomed according to human body standards, what do they find attractive and unattractive in each other? What does the appearance of a show poodle, its coat, its facial features, its bone structure, communicate to other dogs? Of course, to other dogs, appearance is probably not as important as scent...

I always wonder how or why dogs recognise other dogs as dogs. Dogs are so variable in appearance.

I have always wondered why my dog or others are ready to attack another dog while completely ignoring others.

I know. You wonder what they know that you don’t. Or if they’re being ‘mean girls’ sometimes.

I have to confess that Lilypup likes to chase (herd) the gangster types... and that it’s secretly funny to see a thug run from a tiny dog. I kinda think for all the damage thugs will do, they live with high anxiety. You don’t get to be commander when you’re anxious.

I guess laundry day was much simpler back then. You just brush off the lice and you're good to go!
