Hi all,

Just bought a few super cheap dresses from Old Navy, but I'm not sure I quite like any of them. I can't decide whether to return and try again elsewhere, or if I'm getting hung up on issues no one else will notice. Here are my problems:

Coral spaghetti strap dress: I think this fits me really well, but the color is a little too bright and girly for my personal style. Does it strike you as exceptionally girly? I also am not sure what I'd wear with it to tone it down.
Black wrap dress with hi-lo hemline: I think the neckline makes my bust look weird! I have a largish bust so I can be overly sensitive about this area, but I don't think the wrap hits me correctly.
Striped dress: This fits well in the bust but I think it's too large in the waist (one of my typical problems as an hourglass shape). It wasn't expensive enough to be worth tailoring, so I'd just return it, or maybe try and size down.

Of the three options, I like #1 the most, although #3 also fits well and would probably be more versatile. I don't think #1 looks particularly girly, though I don't know your style. You could tone it down with basic ballet flats or gladiator sandals or ankle boots.

To answer your questions, it might help to know a wee bit more about you. Like where and how you plan to wear these dresses, your approximate age, your style descriptors. For now, my opinions, but please take with a big pinch of salt!

#1 is a pretty colour and looks like a good fit, but it is a very youthful looking dress. It doesn't strike me as "girly" so much as very "young." Which might be perfectly fine -- if you're young yourself and want to wear it at the beach or similar.

#2 I like this one best, but if you feel self-conscious in it, that's no good. No reason to keep unless you are desperate.

#3 I don't think this one fits well. So I would take it back.

I agree with your reservations about #1. It's very short and the style in general does have at least what I feel is a "girly" vibe. I actually love the color. To be totally up front, I don't love the other two either. I think ON dresses can be hard to fit in general (I tried a couple last year just to see if I might find a good casual "by the pool" dress). For me, the waist always seems too high or something.

I don't know how old you are or what your goal is with these dresses, but here are my thoughts!

1. Fits the best, but looks short and youthful. It doesn't scream girly to me. (Caveat: I prefer my dresses to fall just below or just at the knee).

2. I like this one a lot! The high-low hem is flattering and I don't see any wonkiness at the bust.

3. Cute idea, but yeah, the fit doesn't work for you.

I really like #2 on you the best and the color of #1. Perhaps wear #2 with a denim jacket and a light, summer scarf in a color that flatters your face?

#3, I think there's a better scoopneck out there for you.

#1 pretty as a ballet dancer in class. I think if you wore it out you'd look like a pretty escapee ballet dancer.

My favorite is 2 elegant and summer appropriate at any age. Keep it! The other two are not impressing me as much and the first one looks like it will wrinkle a lot....

Number 3 doesn't appear to fit properly. The neckline looks like its been stretched out. If you are under 20 years old, Number 1 would be "cute". Number 2 has potential. You might consider a belt to highlight your hourglass figure.

I also like 2 the best. 1 is cute, but I think it depends on where you would wear this and whether it passes the sit test.

Hi and thanks for all the advice! Just to clarify, I am twenty-something and looking for a casual summer dress that I can wear to BBQs and such. As for my style, I tend for go for classic, chic looks. I love blazers, leather, and neutrals like navy, gray, black, and white.

I am going to return #1, try and exchange #3 for a size smaller, and haven't quite made up my mind on #2. Thanks for the advice!

I haven't read all of the responses so I might be repeating.

#1 looks too short to me, unless you plan to wear it as a bathing suit cover up or very casually at the beach. I like the color but the style reads as quite young to me.

I like #2 a lot and don't see any fit issues with it. I think it's flattering and it looks more sophisticated than the others and would probably be very versatile.

I don't think the cut of #3 is very flattering for you.
