My DH has driven me to the edge of reason with his efforts!!
LOL At 53 years of age I think he should have the capability of placing a shirt on a hanger in an orderly manner but no!!
When going out on Saturday night he tried on a few shirts ( he hogs the mirror more than I do) when we came home the shirts that did not make the grade had been put back in the wardrobe some had hit a hanger but looked as if they had been worn by the hunch back of Notre Dame. The rest ended up on the floor of the wardrobe. When I mentioned (very nicely) that I had put them back for him the reply was he was hanger challenged!!
Please tell me I do not suffer alone.

Definitely not alone. Granted, my guy is 24, but I think this is an affliction that many men (and some women) never overcome. My guy likes to re-wear his clothes, so anything that has been worn once but isn't full on dirty yet ends up on the floor. Ugh.

If anyone knows the cure, I would love to hear it!

Maybe beat them over the head with the hanger they refused to use... that way at least the hanger gets used for something.
Kidding! I do not endorse violence as a means of solving problems (most of the time). ;P

Haha. Nope. I nipped this naughty habit in the bud before we were even married. Stray shoes are my issue currently. It is getting better......

p.s. The cure: harping, nagging, constant reminders (your choice here)

My bf refuses to put my laundered clothes away despite the fact that I always do so for him because he says it is too complicated to figure out which things are supposed to be hung up.

And then he stores his "current" pants/shirt on top of the dresser instead of hanging them up. Silly boys.

My older son always had a problem with hanging both pants and shirts. He was left-handed and so blamed it on the right-handed hangars.

I'm afraid to say that at our house, I'm the one that sometimes doesn't hang stuff back up. I don't leave it lying on the floor, but discarded items often end up hanging off the end of the bed or over the backs of chairs. My husband is the tidy one. I do try to pick up after myself because he hates living in a mess, but I'm fighting nature when I do so. He also can't understand how I can forget to close cupboard doors (I don't even notice them).

However, in my closet, everything that is hung up is hanging perfectly on matching hangers or folded neatly, with everything colour organized -- so clearly I also have an obsessive-compulsive streak. Mine's just different, is all.

A certain boy I know likes to toss the dirty laundry on the floor *next* to the hamper... must be a linked gene or something.

I don't know if you do the shirts or if you send them out, but if you do them, tell him that you are tired of having to re-iron his shirts when they end up on the floor. From now on he can take his shirts to the cleaners. (Be sure that he's the one to pick them up and pay for the service). DH is much more careful when he sees what it's costing him. Of course, he may end up deciding to do the shirts himself which would be another solution.
Also, if you have annoying hangers like wire ones, get a bunch of new manly wooden ones...maybe a Fathers' Day gift?

I'm with Elisabeth and Lynne, I'm definitely the messy one and get complained at to hang up my clothes all the time ><

I do all the laundry including washing, drying, steaming/ironing and folding. When I ask hubby to fold, he half folds have balls up items and says I do it better. Even when we pack for a trip, he throws it all on the bed and I have to fold. Ugh.

I agree with those who said you should pass on the responsibility for caring for his clothes. I believe most people minimize the efforts of others and it takes doing the task to understand the work involved.

My boyfriend's clothes are always hanging neatly, organized by type (dress shirts together, suits together, dress pants together, etc.) or else folded neatly on shelves. He won't let me do his laundry (not that I would ask) because he has all sorts of specific cycles for different types of laundry, and his folding is meticulous--the few times I have tried to fold even a tee-shirt of his, he immediately re-does it. I am not complaining!

ITA with dianthus that people minimize the effort it takes to do something when they never do it themselves.

Overall my husband is a much neater person than I BUT he does leave his clothes on the floor. I'll take it though, it's the only messy thing he does! He is cleaning up from dinner as I type

Mine does the dirty clothes right next to the hamper thing. I've even tried leaving the lid off to reduce the effort involved to no avail.

Then when I point it out he looks at me like I'm the evil stepmother.

Also love when theres something to be thrown out in the fridge or a couple of dishes to be washed and he makes sure I know about it rather than just doing it. I do point this out & he always looks a bit sheepish.

Love him anyway.

PS My Grandad has been doing the cloths next to the hamper thing for 50 years now. My Grandma gave up about 30 years ago so I don't know if there's hope.

No wire hangers to juggle with, I bought lovely wooden ones to make it easier.
I have trained him about the dirty laundry, when we were first married 33 years ago I picked it up off the floor and put it under his pillow!! No problem ever again Tee Hee

My rule is if he can't be bothered to put it in the laundry basket I can't be bothered to wash it! As for shirts if he couldn't be bothered to hang them up or put them away properly I wouldn't be re ironing them and he would have to iron them himself or go out creased! x

I told my DH the same thing as Louise did...if it isnt in the laundry basket, its NOT going to get washed! He piles clothes all over the desk in the bedroom and Im not going to try and sort out what needs washing and what doesnt! He's SOOO damn great about doing most chores its wonderful...Just that and his trying to turn our (rarely used) front room into a storage area is all I can really bitch about- thats been a ongoing battle for nearly 6 years- ACK!

LOL! My hubby is the neat one in the family - it must be the engineer in him! Everything is lined up to perfection, whether in his garage or his closet. He inspires me to be organized which I have been for some years now.

Our 25-year old son also has this tendency. Which is a good thing!

This thread is too funny.

This morning's breakfast table fashion tips (from me to the men) were (1) to my dad "you're wearing two different shoes," and (2) to my bf "you have a thrift store sticker on your shirt."

Their fashion tips to me today were that it takes too much time to actually unlace your shoes before putting them on, and that as long as they are wearing pants, they don't care if their shoes go with their pants or not, thank you very much.

Afterism, my DH will walk from one end of the house to the other to let me know that something needs wiping/watering/picking up......I've never gotten his logic? Most times I look at him and say "Well, can you pick it up/wipe it/water it, please?". It doesn't stop him reporting the matter, though!
