To buy or not to buy: Gap tomato red trench

After posting about not wanting to buy a double breasted trench coat yesterday, I think I found a very well fitting trench today

It's from Gap and it is in a blazing tomato red colour! The cellphone pics below are making it look more orange than it is, so here is a link to the coat online, so that you can see its true colour - http://www.gap.eu/browse/produ.....pid=799476

Pic 1 shows the coat belted. Note the sleeve length, which is a little long but not too bad (I think).

Pics 2&3 show close ups of the coat, just to show the fit in the torso and shoulders. I think the fit is pretty spot on and having narrow shoulders, I like the epaulets. I've scrunched up the sleeves a little bit in these two photos.

Pic 4 shows it open and Pic 5 shows it buttoned but not belted. Pic 6 is another pic of it belted, but with the sleeves 'unscrunched'.

What do you ladies think? Like I mentioned yesterday, a coloured topper has been on my list for ages and spring and autumn are our longest seasons, so this trench would get a lot of use! Should I get it?

I'd like to see how it fits in the back. Is it a little big in the shoulders? If not, then I think you should get it BUT ONLY IF YOU PROMISE TO HAVE THE SLEEVES SHORTENED!!! They are too long and make the whole thing look too big. It's a relatively easy tailoring job and will be well worth the money.

I really like it on you! If it were a cooler/darker red, I would be all over it myself.

Mary K: Does it look too big in the shoulders? From what I saw in the dressing room, it fit my shoulders and torso perfectly. And I agree about the sleeves, I don't think it should cost too much and if I'm willing to spend on the trench, I should spend enough to make it PERFECT, right?

qfbrenda: Aah then I wouldn't be able to look as good in it I lean warm so tomato reds really suit me!

I'm funny about shoulder seams -- I don't like them to go even a smidge past my actual shoulders. But this one may be just right given that you'll want to layer under it.

And you are spot-on about spending for alterations!!

Hm, I'd like to see a size down, just for comparison. I also question whether it is big in the shoulders. Would you wear it open much? It looks a bit more overwhelming like that.

Have you seen the one at J. Crew? It is single breasted, and I believe their shoulders fit narrower than BR.

I feel like it looks a little big on you at the waist, but that may just be the angle of the photos. Did the belt hit you at the right spot?

Rae: This is an extra small - I don't think it goes any smaller than this I would probably wear it closed more than open, but I'd like a trench I can wear both ways, you know? The J crew one looks nice, but I can't stand hoods, so that one is not for me. Thanks though

Gorgeous colour on you Kirti - I'm also wondering if it might be a smidege too large but you may want to have some room for layering. Agree with MaryK about having the sleeves shortened.

I have a GAP trench (it is a medium) that was recently gifted to me and it does feel like a lot of fabric (almost the the swallowing up point, although i doubt a small would fit my shoulders) being double breasted and all, i like the idea of looking at a single breasted trench. But idea doesnt necessarily equal reality when availability and price start factoring in!

Sarah A: Agreed! I normally wear a medium or small and even an XS seems a little too big on me! My ideal spring coat would be lightweight, single breasted and coloured... let's see if I can find it.

Love the colour but this still seems like a lot of coat for a petite lady like you. Mind you, I'm biased against double breasted anyway because I don't like the way they look open.

I love the color but I do feel the cut looks a little large for your small frame. Maybe I'm just prejudiced against double breated AND belted styles. I hate them on me! I think this one is gorgeous and would look so pretty on you (see below).

Kirti, lovely as that colour is, I too think you should keep looking. Apart from fit, I'm also thinking that stiff fabric is doing your slender frame no favours. If you know you want something single-breasted and lighter weight, keep looking!
