Tiny steps

My style journey is one of tiny steps. First, discover this site as my fashion home, second, devour the archives, third, join the forum. Inspired at each step, I am having a lot of fun along the way. Today, in step #4, I took WIW photos for the first time. Extraordinary! The photo is far more telling than the mirror. I immediately tweaked my outfit, for the better I think, and that leads me to step #5: posting photos so I can get your feedback. Now, I have to confess that taking that next step is pretty challenging for me; I'm procrastinating. It's silly, I know, because all the members are so supportive and there's a vein of kindness that runs deep on this site. But who else feels as I do? Are there any other 'fraidy cats like me lurking out there?

Hi Lantana, can't say that I'm a 'fraidy cat, I'm a jump in boots an' all kinda gal. Come, on, jump in with the rest of us! It's such good fun, you'll love it!

DO jump in. You will be glad that you did. I read Angie's blog for quite a while before I discovered the forum. Then I discovered the forum but couldn't figure it out. Then I started reading the forum a bit and got the idea of what was going on here. But my REAL learning did not start until I began to post those pics. It's not just because of the feedback (though the feedback helps.) It's not just because of the objectivity that the photo offers (though that helps, too.) It's some combination of these, PLUS the commitment of doing it, that focuses one's learning. So jump in! Please do! You will be glad that you did.

That's ok, we all take our time doing things.
What I've learned from posting photos is that sometimes we are much harder on ourselves than others.There were outfits that got better reviews from the forum that I would have given them myself.And, as Suz says, when posting photos is when you really start learning .
Join the fun whenever you feel ready for that.

I remeber my first time, I'm not a good exemple because I took all the steps on day 1 (including the photo)! Don't be afraid, here everyone understands and we have all been there!

Hi Lantana, I'm so glad you found YLF! Posting pictures for the first time really is a little scary, isn't it. But this truly is the most kind and supportive group of women anywhere on the internet, and the advice and feedback you receive are really priceless.

Lantana, I felt SO strange the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th...times I posted photos. I found it SUPER scary. But then I realized just how much it was helping me and everyone was/is so encouraging and constructive. So, if you want to do it, just know that we all feel/felt the way you do. But even taking pics is hugely helpful, isn't it? The other day I was in the dressing room about to buy a dress and then I snapped a photo with my phone and immediately realized that I shouldn't. It's a bit annoying, actually! It sure would be convenient if we could just see immediately the issues, rather than having to go thru the process of taking photos!

First of all, welcome Lantana! I lurked on YLF for 8 months before I posted my first WIW and then I wondered why I waited so long! You will receive wonderful support and constructive suggestions. But take your time - we'll be ready when you are!

I think we've all felt that initial fear before we posted those first WIW pics! You already know how FAB this group is and that we all have our different shapes and sizes. So when you are ready, we will be here to cheer and help you along. Remember, you don't have to show us your face if you don't want to. You can edit it out or wear sunglasses.

I do think posting your WIW's not only helps you in getting valuable feedback, but also helps the forum members remember who you are. I've been here two years and this forum has grown so much since then, that I'm having a hard time remembering who is who. So if you like it here, then go ahead and take the plunge. : )

I'm glad to hear that you are taking outfit pics for yourself. That has helped me tremendously. Are you keeping a folder of your pics? I like putting them in categories of likes and dislikes so I can reference and study them later. I even have a category of outfits that got a killer rating from Angie for days when I can't think of what to wear. : ) So even if you decide not to post here, do utilize your pictures for self study.

I do hope you decide to post. We are a group full of eager helpers!

I am ready to post photos now, thanks to your words of wisdom and empathy, but I am having some teething problems with photobucket.

I'll get there eventually!

In the meantime, thanks Suz and Celia, I believe it when you say I will gain so much more by posting photos.

Soobee, your words really touched a chord because I'm not normally a wuss, I'm usually pretty plucky. (Maybe you can tutor me on how to get a successful link to the forum from photobucket?)

Ooh goody, you're going to post pics! I don't know how familiar you are with photobucket - but I'd be very happy to help. Have you loaded the photos onto photobucket yet?

Yes, Soobee, I've got that far, except it's just one photo! I've got a link, which I copied, but when I pasted it into this "reply" box it was dead as a door nail. It was just ordinary type, not in blue or red and I couldn't click on it. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Oh yes. My first WIW I hit submit and ran like mad for the greenhouse in the garden. Then I took a whole day to work up the nerve to see if any body had looked at it!!
Guess what .. everybody was as usual honest , kind and helpful YAY for YLF

OK then, what I do once the photo is loaded to photobucket is,
hover my pointer on the pic, then it comes up with a few option underneath.
I move the pointer down to the box next to Direct link, which has a "http://blablalinkystuff" link,
left click the mouse on that info, and then the "http://blabla" is automatically replaced with the work "copied".
Then go into the ylf section where you want the pic, right click your mouse and click on paste.
