Timid first tries with the shorts.

For those of you following the saga of my wool ankle pants, here they are as cutoffs.

So far I’ve only tried the most obvious pairings with supporting acts by each color in the pattern, navy and cream, and by mixing those two colors. I like some of these better than others. What do you think?

Thanks for comments and suggestions. I’d particularly appreciate ideas for more interesting/adventurous ways to wear them, like with the black and white boots.

Well they do work fine as shorts but I much prefer the black tights to the white ones. I think you could also try tall black boots with these, and maybe a slouchier oversized sweater or perhaps a long cardigan or coat instead of your shorter fitted jackets. Depends if you want a more dressier look or not.

Dee, thanks for kicking off the black/white discussion. The tights I have on here are navy, not black. Cool idea about roomier or longer tops. I’ll have a look-see in my wardrobe. This mustard sweater comes to mind; it has black in the marl.

My favorites are 2, 4, 5. I like having the red repeated in the outfit. Did you try #3 with the white boots? And, I think you might have a burgundy cardigan? Might be interesting to try 3 with some burgundy/berry tops.

Like Dee I prefer them with the darker tights. I’m not sure why but the white tights feel ‘seasonally confused’ in a way the dark tights do not.

I really like the shorts! Love the windowpane pattern. Pairing them with a blazer comes to mind. I used to have a mustard blazer and shorts set in the the 90’s that I just adored

I like #2 - with a clean black support act, and colour repetition to pull the look together. That works very well! A blazer over the lot would be swish. And a big scarf over that for warmth and drama! Do you have a blazer, Stag? I'm not sure.....

How about your long navy coat over the top? A long cardigan? And wearing your taller black boots, maybe?

Angie, the support act in #2 is all navy. But since you seem to think it’s a good idea with black, I’ll try that too. Navy coat with the black then? My blazers are jersey, which might be ok with shorts. Thanks for the inspo pix. These being tapered is giving me fits—need bigger pieces on top.

Kkards, after Joy commented about winter white on my other thread, I was thinking the all cream outfit was going to be the bomb, but it bombed. A good reminder to me to always try the pieces on together!

ST, nude to me tights. I haven’t gone there for decades, but probably could venture back by now, as much as I wear tights. (I hated pantyhose, so wore garter belts with stockings for a long time before trying some sweater tights. These days I have thin tights like these navy ones, so is there even a difference?)

Yes those white boots would be great, same white or near white top/topper - basically a white-out outfit with a bit of graphic effect black ‘trim’ from the boot soles and shorts pattern.

See, this is what’s bugging me. If the top matches the white boots, then how does it work with the cream shorts? Same with black soles & navy windowpanes. Guess I’ll just have to try it & see.

I don’t mind cream tights, actually. For me personally, it’s too matchy or attempted to match. I would try a different direction - take outfit #3 and change the cream sweatshirt (jacket?) to a mustard sweater. Also, I would try #5 with a red jacket instead of cream. Good luck!
