I have the hardest time deciding what color hosiery to wear with dresses in the fall. It seems like the bulk of what's available is black, gray, or some sort of "nude".

I like the idea of transitioning silk dresses to fall with boots and leather or cropped jackets and tights but I hate to go all dark right away. What about a dress like this? How would you transition it? (I thought of the question because its description says it transitions easily and I had a hard time imagining it.)

Or what about a navy or burgundy dress?

First of all, that is one stunning dress, I love the colors. It is a difficult issue, and I would probably do nude micro-fishnets or something similar with some texture. For navy or burgundy dress, there are more options: nude or black micro-fishnets, or any other black lace-y texture so that some skin is visible, or even matching solid tights in navy or burgundy. I have a pair of burgundy tights with a small black pattern, and would totally wear those with a burgundy dress and tall black boots.

Try it over jeans! Either skinnies or crops.

I also like the look of dresses like that over slightly slouchy tall or midcalf boots. Personally I'd do black suede but I have black hair. I think something like taupe or camel would be nice too. I'm kind of anti-tights these days so I don't really have tights suggestions for you, sorry.

hmm, taupe OTK and nude fishnets combined, now there's a thought. (since I have beige hair)

How about tall brown/tan boots but no tights? I've done that and it feels right if it is early fall.

I agree that a dress like that could go with boots, but not really with tights. The pattern is light enough that any tights wouldn't look right with it. You could wear sheer hose, but the only colour option would be nude, so you would be just as well off going bare legged, IMO.

I would wear nude hose or fishnets with this dress and either brown/tan/taupe boots or shoes. With your colouring I think this would work really well.

I think this is where bookending can really help, when you are not matching a pattern in a dress to anything else.

White or cream boots could work if you have them.

With a navy or burgundy dress I think you can go into browns/camels/cognacs/greys or blacks. If I was wearing black footwear I would add a touch of black elsewhere in the outfit (cuff/bag/scarf/necklace) but that is just me....I probably would not bother for the other colours.

I would wear that kind of dress with knee high boots in taupe, camel or cognac. (Yes, I have all options covered.) I tend to wear lighter coloured boots in spring/fall and sometimes on wet days in summer (sshhh!). No tights if the weather is warm enough. Today I am wearing taupe knee high boots with bare legs but I have long socks underneath for warmth. The socks don't show. Really only my knees are bare. I also like the idea of nude micro fishnets and I am going to give them a whirl at some stage. Couldn't you also wear that dress with ankle boots/sock boots in a lighter colour and bare legs or nude hose?

I feel like you could do just about any color of boots if you bookend with a scarf, necklace, hair adornment or jacket. The bold colors in this dress would play well with black, chocolate, cognac, burgundy, tan, taupe or cream. I'd just match the tights somewhat to the boots.

And, your dilemma is mine, and that of all fair haired women who want to wear lighter coloured dresses but live in a cold climate!!

Seriously, I have tried various options. Nude sheer. (Okay...but hard to get the right nude and not very practical when you have a cat). Nude microfishnet. (Also okay...but the ones I have are a bit light for my complexion, they are not all that warm, and I don't like how they feel on the bottom of my feet.) Light coloured boots and booties...helpful, but how many of us have light taupe knee high or OTK boots? (Brooklyn excepted.)

I do think that is probably the best bet unless you want to go more casual over jeans.

The thing of it is...black or dark (navy, ink, charcoal, dark burgundy) can feel so heavy and unbalanced when you are a blonde. I don't know what it is. It's easy for anyone with black hair. Put on black boots and *boom*!!

I'm about to go through this whole thing again now that my hair is silver. I think that black may actually work better than before (YAY) but lighter is still going to be better on the whole, so it is a whole exercise of re-jigging.

Huh, re: what Suz said, I never even noticed how much easier this transition is with dark hair and a high-contrast complexion. I feel so lucky.

I have some heather-y light brown tights from Hue that might work in this situation. I bet heather grey tights plus the right burgundy, or even cognac, boots would look great with that particular dress and give a good autumnal vibe. Or switch it around and do burgundy tights and a taupe or grey boot, or even a white bootie!

Hue makes a fair number of lighter colored but still opaque tights, if you want something more substantial than nude. I have about half a dozen pairs from them, from dark to light, and that seems to be enough that I can always find something that will work with a given outfit.

That is gorgeous! Honestly? I wear my Spanx faux leather leggings as tights but that wouldn't work with more delicate looks. I agree burgundy is a great option.

I LOVE the dress. Very pretty. I would honestly opt for a grey thigh high boot instead to keep your legs warm, especially as it looks amazing with shirt dresses that tie at the waist.

Since the colors are very bright I would opt for a grey suede boot instead of a black, because it would look very harsh.

I tend to just wear leggings with it but would otherwise wear nude micro fishnets.
