Tiger velvet wrap dress - is this too short?

I recently bought this wrap dress, to mainly wear over dark skinny jeans, but did want to see if you thought it was too short to be worn on its own. I can successfully wear it with a safety pin to stop the skirt coming open when sitting.

I loved the black velvet and white piping and I am always drawn to oriental prints, so I am happy to wear it with jeans only, but it would be nice to have the versatility of it as a dress as well.

I would appreciate your honest opinion.

It is not too short for you to wear on its own. It is beautiful and will also look nice with the pants.

Beautiful dress. Will be nice worn over pants. To my eyes, it is too short to be worn as a dress, and I think that you have the same feeling yourself and that this is why you ask.

Bridgie - I am glad that you like the dress, I am a lover of velvet, so whilst I had reservations about the length, I did not want to pass it up. It will be nice to be able to have the option to wear it as a dress.

Sterling - thank you! I am glad that you think it works for me. Hilariously, I bought some jeans that had distressed knees and my husband asked me if I was having a mid-life crisis, so I am not too sure of what he will think if I start wearing mini dresses!

Mainelady - I am glad that you don't think it is too short. Whilst I was thinking I could wear it with opaque black stockings, I would prefer not too, just because it is so much black.

The Cat - hmmm, you definitely have something there... if I need to ask the question, I probably already know the answer. It does look good over jeans, so I am happy to keep it. I may occasionally wear it as a dress if I feel daring enough. Thank you for your honest opinion, much appreciated.

May I hedge my bets? It looks a little odd to me worn as a dress with bare legs. I think it is the contrast of the black with the skin? But I wouldn't think it too short if worn with some sort of black tights, I feel, whether opaque or sheer. I would like to see it tried like that. Currently I cannot decide either yay or nay...

It's gorgeous on you! For me I'd say a little too short for work, at least with bare legs. But I probably wouldn't treat it as a work dress anyway because it's so exotic. (Well, maybe if I was going out after work...) But it's perfect for date nights and going out wear (and definitely not too short for that).
You should wear it both ways. And with crop pants too.
Oh, and a trick I do sometimes is to wear a tapered black pencil or tube skirt underneath a dress that is a little short to lengthen it. With this dress you could then wear a leather belt over the self tie at the waist to create a peplum jacket effect with the dress over the underskirt. It could look a bit 1940s movie star awesome.

I don't think it's too short but I think I would like it better with tights or tall boots. It's an interesting piece and I'm curious to see how you style it over jeans.

I don't think it's too short per se, but there is something about the style that I think may work best treated as a tunic over leggings or even flares. I really like it, but I'm getting a slight bathrobe vibe from it with bare legs. That might be a quirk of my own personal bias. Something about wrap styles that are on the short side. I'd love to see it styled with pants or leggings.

I'm with Janet on this one. It doesn't look like a dress to me - it looks like a jacket/wrap/kimono/whatever meant to be worn as a third piece. Very cool though!

Bijou, I don't think it's too short - but FWIW, I'm not convinced it's fabulous worn this way. I like Brooklyn and Janet's styling suggestions. Try that.

I think leggings or tights would be better than bare legs too. Is there a bit of burgundy in the flower? Bottoms that picked up that color might be nice.

IMO, it's not too short for modesty but the piece doesn't look its best worn as a dress at this length. Using it as a tunic sounds like a fab idea.

I agree with others that it is not the length that is too short, it is the colour and the style. I love it- it will be gorgeous with pants under and I could see a pencil skirt too. It is a stunning piece!!

I could see it working with leggings - maybe with a pump? Not sure but the sliver of ankle skin might balance it out - I think opaques might be too dark?

It looks a bit too short with bare legs. It could still be dress-like with a bit of skirt showing an inch or two at the bottom. It could be black or white, or pick up a color in the pattern like light pink... maybe tulle or lace.

Janet said what I was thinking. I wouldn't give up on it, but with bare legs and the open neck, it does look akin to a fabulous bathrobe. I would be tempted to try it with something like a sheer black blouse, black micro fishnets and the black tube skirt Brooklyn suggested.

I would love to see an outfit lab with it. There IS a perfect way to style it. I'm just not sure what it is.

It's gorgeous but it doesn't read as dress to me. I would wear this with pants and treat it like a wrap jacket that you keep on. I think the proportions of the overall outfit will work better this way xx

So... not too short. But I feel like it's a lot of material on you. I think you would need open toe shoes and big jewellery at the neck to wear this as a dress - or a red turtleneck, red stockings, and red shoes... to go loud...

Try a tube or fitted pencil just a few inch longer, underneath.

What Janet and Deborah said. It's a combination on length and style that does not read as a " dress". I think it could still have multiple stylings, but in other ways.

Wow - thank you so much for all the styling ideas. I was not sure about this, and now you have helped so much. It is wonderful to be able to tap into the collective style wisdom of YLF. I will have a play and take photos on the weekend to report back!

JenniNZ - whilst I was worried that I would look like too much black, I actually think I should give opaques and knee high boots a try - it is likely to look much better than currently worn with bare legs.

Brooklyn - the skirt idea is genius - I will definitely give it a try!

RobinF & Sara L - I think full height boots would be an improvement, so I will give that a try.

Janet - you are so right, it does look a bit bathrobe...that is not the look I was hoping for, so I need to change things up. I will give cropped flare jeans a try - that may work really well. Thank you for the suggestion.

Lisa P - thanks for your feedback. I do like the tunic, so I just have to work out how to wear it. I think it will be a fun piece to wear as a tunic.

Sal - I had not thought of leggings and a pump, but that could be a fun way of wearing it.

Joy - I love the idea of putting a fun skirt underneath.

Zibbets - treating it as a layering piece is a good idea. I had not thought of wearing a top underneath it.

Deborah - I really like wearing pants, so I think treating it as a jacket will work well.

Rachy - I love the idea of wearing red underneath, but I am not too sure about wearing red stockings. I may look like a crazy Santa's helper!

Lyn67 - a tube skirt underneath is a great way to get the dress effect. I will have to try it out with a pencil skirt.
