Thrifting trip - K/R? (ETA new photos 8&9 of dress)

Stopped by Goodwill yesterday after dropping off a *new* wool rug to be cleaned - thanks to one of my furry friends. Someone is in the doghouse.

I would love your honest opinions on these pieces as there is a 7 day return window. Nothing has been ironed either.

1,2 and 3 are a Talbots petite lined linen dress. The red belt was already in my closet. Not sure about the length, but I think I like where it hits - it camoflages my knock knees. They sure make it tough to put my feet together in yoga : )

4, 5 and 6 are a Coldwater Creek denim-ish skirt. It does have the front zip, which makes it wonky in the belted shot. It is much too long and has been pinned up 4" for the pictures. Is this just too school marm/girl scout leader-ish? (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

7 is a black Ralph Lauren 3/4 sleeve cotton tee. They're hard to see, but there are two gold buttons at the top of each shoulder. I'm pretty sure I'm keeping this.

I really need to figure out how to do those photo collages.

I like the top a lot. I think the skirt would work except for the wonkiness - will that go away if you iron the skirt? If not, I would return it, just because that would annoy me.

The dress looks like it's too big for you to me.

The red dress is great! Love it belted and the fit seems really good to my eye. I like the Coldwater Creek denim-ish skirt too. It is casual, yet a bit more put together than a denim skirt. Do you bother about the front zip? If you do, you might consider to return. #7 is a keeper IMO

I think the linen dress has potential and I like the RL top. I'd return the skirt; I think your instincts on the vibe it gives out are correct. I hope someone with a better eye weighs in about the fit of the dress, especially the back.

I like the rosey red A line dress very much, but it needs the waist defining belt. Love the sophisticated colour combination of the plum top and olive skirt. You have a very strong classic vibe to your style. *love!*

I was talking to my husband about the skirt and he suggested wearing sideways. I did actually try that, but it didn't work : )

cinnamon fern, harmonica, Anne, Mellllls and Runcarla - thanks for taking a look. I suppose I could even try washing the skirt too, but I suspect the zipper just has to much backbone to soften up.

I'm sure I've already clubbed you over the head with this already, but I've put on some weight and bought these hoping they would help me get by until I can get in gear enough to do something about it. I'm completing week one but who knows how long I'll last. I've had about 3 "week ones" since the first of the year.

Love the dress, hem it for just as the knee/above the knee if you feel like it or just wear heels (that extends the line of the leg when the skirt is longer). I think the dress lays fine, looks even more fantastic with the belt.

Not loving the skirt though. It's just not a stand out piece for me.

The top you already know you are keeping is pretty fab.

Dress looks great with the belt, but a little big without. Shirt is great. Skirt? Not sure about.

All good finds! Love the dress with the belt, without it does look a bit roomy, unless you had a jacket or blazer over it. I think you should go up another inch or so on the skirt. Top is a winner!

LIke the dress a lot. From your description of the skirt's problems and the pix, I tend to think that it's not the end of the world to have an extra skirt BUT if I compare how you look in the white pants to the outfit with the skirt, I would ask myself why I wanted to wear that (schoolmarm) skirt when I could wear this (sleek white pants).

ETA: so I mean: hold out for a skirt that looks as sharp as those pants

I like the dress quite a lot and think it could be really useful to you. It looks as if that linen is a nice weight and has a good drape to it. I like it belted best.

I also LOVE the new black top.

I'd bid the skirt goodbye. It's just not special enough for you. And as one who has also thrifted her share of those denim skirts with the zippered front, I would say that if anything is liable to make one feel one's stomach is "pouchy" it is those darn front zippers on skirts.

We have a YLF consensus! I love the red dress on you --- with the belt, particularly. The blue top is also very flattering and versatile. Good finds!

Remember to be gentle with yourself! Weight fluctuations are the norm, not the exception, and they are always most noticeable to us.

Texstyle, I added a pic #3 with the widest belt I own and also pinned the back of the dress #9. Not a huge difference, but maybe I should look into alterations. Seems kind of odd for a $4 dress though.

I think the skirt will go back. I'm going to takes Suz's words to heart that it "isn't special enough for me".

And Vildy, I don't know if you're from the US, but thank you for the V8 Juice "plonk" to the forehead about why would I want to wear the skirt when I could wear the white pants. Brilliant!

Wow that red dress is such a find! I'll bet it will look even better when the linen *relaxes* and wrinkles just a little bit. I also love the black boat-necked top, especially with those amazing white slacks. The denim skirt is *okay* but seeing as you'd have to alter it, I wonder if you'd rather hold out for a better one? I guess it all depends on how much you need it right now.

Claire, I don't have much of a spring/summer wardrobe. A couple of dresses that fit ok, but my bottoms are two skirts are two pair of white jeans that are way too tight. No light weight pants. My cropped pants would be offensive to wear out in public. Tops are really low too. The two that I wore most often last summer aren't going to make my YLF cut for this year.

But I have time to find something else. I think I got all excited because the skirt seemed to fit and I had it in my head that that was what I need.

And now I want to eat chocolate chip cookie dough.

I love the dress and I don't think it's too big when belted. I like to wear linen a bit loose anyway because in the summer I don't like my clothes to be too form fitting. The colour is just great on you.
I would probably keep the skirt too,, mainly because it's very hard to find summer skirts that are not too short, and with this one you have the option of choosing a very flattering length. I was out today looking and found several very cute skirts that fit me well, but they were all 2 inches too short
The black top is a keeper too. Fits well and will go with everything.

heh, yeah I'm from the U.S. and I loved your V8 moment. In fact, that's one of the ways I cull my wardrobe. I ask myself what I'd *really* want to wear here or there and that helps me realize that I might have a number of options but I'm just never going to choose them over one that makes me look a certain way (whatever role I'm currently playing in my head )

I am reading your mail girl. I have SO often said, yay, it fits, it was on my list, done! And then ended up with something no more than a place holder in my closet. I was starting the season (and it will be 90F by next weekend) with two skirts and 1 pair of clams that I'm not loving any more so don't feel bad. Then I found another skirt yesterday at Goodwill's 50% off sale, so that makes three. Now I have some breathing room. I also find that people really clean out their closets and donate huge amounts of stuff when the weather changes. Hopefully you have more time than me!

Love, love, love the dress! That is a keeper for sure, and I am beyond jealous you thrifted it! Why don't my thrift stores EVER have something like that?

Not feeling the skirt, but I would keep everything else, especially the dress (did I me ton that?) and the RL top.

Yep, Talbots may not be trendy, but great quality basics. :). That dress is exactly that IMHO. Yes, it is red, but still a basic you spice up with belt and shoes.

Love the dress! I'm a sucker for linen and then when you add that gorgeous, saturated colour - WOW! Definitely keep. I also quite like the RL knit top - keep that as well.

I'm not crazy about the skirt to be honest. I'm not a big fan of the front zip in skirts - I find it a bit bulky. You're too fab for this skirt Pil- send it packing.

Love the dress but it might need a little adjustment around the arm holes. I love linen, red and this is a great style. I think it has been agreed that you will return the skirt? The black top looks great too!
