thrift store misadventures, aka OH HOW EMBARRASSING.

okay, so i really like pinafore dresses like these:

i know they can look very little girl-y, but i love the layering possibilities, and they really appeal to my girly, vintagey style.

so anyways, i'm combing through a goodwill in my new area, and it's excellent. plenty of options, etc. then, i come across a black pinafore dress for $2.99. it's a steal, it fits perfectly, and it's right on track with what i'm looking for. score!

i go home, take it out to cut off the price tag and gloat at my new find, and realize something odd: the tag says it's a size 16. hmm, i think, i have put on weight, but not enough to change my size so drastically. obviously, this is a dress for girls -- not women. this isn't as big of a deal as you'd think -- i have actually bought size 16 girls things before. feel free to judge me. anyway, i look at the brand and think, hmm, i've never heard of them before. so i do some quick googling...

and yeah. i bought an ACTUAL girl's school uniform.

sigh. only me, i swear. only me.

I got this tunic thingy with Angie and I also found out when I got home that it is a size 16! In my case I could not figure out if it was a girls' dress, or if it's just a weird or very old sizing scheme. But I'm pretty sure it is...

i guess i found it embarrassing -- and kind of funny -- because it's still on sale on the brand's website! it's this jumper in black:

oh, and it won't stop me from wearing it. if anything, it's a fun challenge trying to figure out ways to make it look as non-school uniform as possible!

My tunic thingy is by "Blush" and while I have found lots of clothing places with that name, none have the same logo as the one on the label. It will remain a mystery I guess.

I was just checking Mini Boden to see if they had any girls' polkadot dresses...but no luck...

Hanna, I think this is hilarious but not in a bad way! I think the tunic is adorable and VERY you- so who cares where it's from/who made it? Can't wait to see how to style it.

This is so funny! I've had a similar experience, but much more embarrassing: I once bought a pair of men's jeans thinking they were women's. They were on the women's plus size rack at Nordstrom Rack, they fit me, and I didn't think twice... until I got home and noticed the crotch was sort of funny looking...

Then I took a further look at the sizing label, Googled the style name, and realized my mistake. Yep. Now THAT'S embarrassing.

Oh well, you should be happy you fit into girl's clothes! I was reading a book by Isaac Mizrahi and he recommends checking out the boy's section, especially for scaled down tuxedo jackets! Style is where you find it I guess!

That's a great tip Kristine. I might look for a boy's tuxedo jacket.

I may be dating myself here, but Sassy magazine used to show things from French Toast in their fashion spreads - things like this dress, white button downs, etc. And I loved that magazine, because their fashion sense was like mine - sort of indie/unusual. So take it as a mark of your fashion forwardness!

Yesterday my family visited my mom and dad. As we were leaving, I couldn't find my coat anywhere. I thought I had lost my mind. Later, as we got out of the car at a Wendy's, I noticed that my 8 year old boy was wearing it.....and it fit him.

AND it WAS a boys' safari jacket in a size 12 that I bought two years ago at the Gap on clearance. We all laughed our butts off. The entire family voted that it looks better on my son and that he should inherit it now. These silly things in life keep us laughing and cheerful, don't you think ? Thanks for your story.

I used to buy boys and girls' clothing on purpose, because it was cheaper! I still remember scoring a great flannel boy's shirt for $2. I wore that for years.

I sometimes wear little boy's button shirts (but they are too short in the sleeves), for a preppy look. I wish I could wear a girl's dress. I did that until about 15, when the hips just wouldn't let me anymore. I can't wait to see you style this pinafore/jumper.
I remember Sassy magazine. It was the coolest. And that sassy looking teenaged Chloe Sevigny.
