ThredUP vs Poshmark?

I'm taking time to clear closets while I"m finishing up a remodel. I've got a decent number of items to pass to a new home, and am considering options. For me, right now, convenience is a key. I don't have time/energy to list and ship a la Poshmark.

I've used ThredUPs closet clean out for smaller cleans (5-6 pieces, not really worried about recouping $). And it's bought me a couple pairs of shoes - really have used more as a way to do more than Goodwill, but with high convenience.

But in this case, I"m talking more clothes, and at (originally) a higher price point. So I'm not sure if it's worth the convenience factor to use ThredUP, or if I should box and hold items until I have more time for Poshmark. Has anyone tried both? Any suggestions?

If you’re not overly concerned about financial return, I’d just go thredUP. They do pay more for higher end brands although it’s not as much as you’d get from consignment or eBay. I’ve not used Poshmark but have heard you have to work pretty hard to promote your listings, ‘like’ other people’s to get visibility etc.

I've used thredup for kids clothes when I didn't live near any brick n mortar options. It's pretty low return, I've found -- which was fine since I just ended up buying more kids clothes with the store credit.

I'm pretty turned off by Poshmark; I've received some items in very poor condition, not at all as pictured by the sellers. Luckily I was using free ship/return promos so was able to return pronto and receive full refunds. As far as selling goes, it's a lot of work, and feels a bit too much like social media to me -- I do t like all the liking/following g/commenting/browsing involved. I'm old school and much prefer selling via eBay or local consignment, for which I have several good options now. I'm not a high-end shopper, so when I resale it's usually mid-range brands like Boden and J Crew, and occasional vintage items.

I appreciate this question and am following the replies. La Pedestrienne, I’m bummed to hear your experience with Poshmark. My husband is mostly retired (caring for my mother and doing some acting). He is up for doing some posting and mailing for me. But liking, commenting and following really doesn’t sound fun.

I've tried both. I personally cannot abide poshmark- I recently tried again since I had a nicer item to sell, but it seems like a big time investment and social media activity. I wouldn't mind the time listing, boxing, mailing etc, but I wasn't into the following, promoting, attending online parties, etc.

I've used thredup a lot, they are super convenient but don't expect much in payouts- it can be frustrating to compare with poshmark in terms of the $.

I've had the best luck with selling on Ebay. More work than just sending something a bag of stuff off to ThredUp, but better return on effort IMO. And does not have the social media rigamarole that people are describing with Poshmark. (Another thing I appreciate about selling on Ebay is the defined listing periods, vs. on Poshmark your item could sit around for possibly months.)

Unless all that goes with listing, selling promoting etc sounds fun you, I think you should stick with Thredup. Like you said, you get a little money which makes it kind of fun, and there's no hassle.

I’ve used ThredUP, and it’s by far the most convenient way to get rid of a lot, but the returns are poor. It takes a long time to process now too. I just donate the items since the effort is not even worth it for the small amount of money I get, but I live in a city with no car and have to carry each bag to the post office. Whereas there is a donation box (for a charity whose used bookstore was my wedding reception venue) in my building’s basement now. So for me the calculation is different than for most.

I haven't sold any clothing at any of the places listed, but I have bought a couple of pieces on Poshmark and was very happy with the process and the items. I would buy via Poshmark again.

Interesting...thanks for starting this conversation. I’ve sold some stuff locally, but I’m pretty lazy about it, will look into ThredUP

Thanks for starting this discussion! I just checked out Poshmark a couple of days ago and noticed that, upfront, they indicate that the donor has to push the item on their social media. Not for me.

A few minutes ago checked out ThredUp. Was pleased to see that, even though they say "nothing over 5 years old" they have plenty of items from a designer that went out of business probably 6-7 years ago. And I have a couple of things in excellent shape from that designer.

But also noticed they say it can take up to 4 weeks just to process an incoming bag. Not that I need quick cash, but sounds like a recipe for "oops we lost your shipment.". Also not thrilled about payment options: site credit (I'm trying to reduce my shopping), visa gift card (ok I guess), or paypal (don't use). I.e. all options limit you to spending, when I'm trying to save $$. The modern world I guess.

I've used RealReal a couple of times and they send a check, also process shipments and payouts promptly. Though of course I presume their volume is lower.

However, I decided to order a seller's bag - will see how it works.

Speaking from experience, you’ll make more if you use the more labor intensive platforms such as poshmark or eBay. You give up some of those earnings for the ease of ThredUp. What about considering local consignment shops? That may be a happy medium for your situation. Also, not sure where you live, but you may also consider selling to Plato’s Closet or Clothes Mentor. I’d say you make a bit more selling to them over ThredUp, but would still earn less than selling on Poshmark or eBay. good luck!!

Very interesting. I have not used either since I don't live in their selling zone. I have had good experiences with the RealReal but they only take designer stuff. I have sold things on ebay and if your husband has time and patience for packaging and mailing I think that is the way to go.

I use Tradesy to sell. For anything worth at least 40.00 used, Tradesy has a really convenient system with good financial return. I say at least 40.00 because Tradesy takes a minimum of 17.50 I believe for commission and shipping.
For buying, I occasionally use Tradesy, but the items I want (mostly J Crew) are much cheaper on ebay. I use to buy from Poshmark, I bought more than 50 items in fact, but was turned off by the lack of professionality -and sometimes ethics!- of both sellers and buyers. I eventually dropped Poshmark because it wasn't worth my time and effort.

Printed out label
And sent out
Easy

Thred up is easier
In that you just put the stuff in their bag but I felt like I should have just donated for how little they gave me for the items.

Based on the comments, I definitely think I’ll hold off on Poshmark. I’m going for convenience, not building a market!

Love the local consignment idea. The closest one to me focused on designers, so sadly that’s beyond what I’m trying to offload. But I’ll do some looking.

I think the next step will be to sort the donations. I’d like to send as much as possible to Wardrobe for Opportunity. Then depending on what’s left I’ll either look at ThredUp or hold for when I have time for eBay or maybe RealReal.

I agree with everything earlier fabbers have posted. I use ThreadUp but it's really a low return and takes forever.
I have a couple of nicer handbags from Michael Kors and Coach and will probably post them on eBay as I have better luck with that but it takes more effort.
