This jean jacket look...

I really like it. The jacket seems so deliberate, rather than an afterthought, even over the long heavy sweater which I'd never have thought to pair. Maybe because it's buttoned closed and not so jacket-y, or because all the buttons align?

Maybe because the buttons line up, it feels more like one jacket to you? Like denim with interesting knit detail, instead of a plain denim jacket? Not sure. It just looks uncomfortable to me, lol.

Una - to me it's the thickness of the sweater under the jean jacket that throws it off. Proportion wise I can see the two different lengths working together, like your photo does, but because the sweater isn't "flowy" it seems too big under the jacket. Does that make any sense? I am going next week to get my eyes tested - maybe they aren't working right???

I'm with Shannon. It's the fabric weight. On yours, it's lighter than the jacket. With a heavier fabric under a lighter fabric, I get the feeling Rae described. I'd just be uncomfortable. And it LOOKS like that to me.

Shannon, it's me who could be off - it wouldn't be the first time! I wouldn't expect to like this look for the exact reasons you've stated (bulky underlayer), but I do - I feel like the jacket reigns things in and gives a faux-"fit and flare". It's more inspiration than execution, but I like the idea of it.

Your look is far superior.

Bulky sweaters look better on their own. When I put anything over them, I look like a tank.

I saw this girl in a Peet's coffee once, who basically did this, and it is one of my all-time favorite looks: cropped jacket and long sweater coat.

It was a more grown up look than the one in picture. The jacket was leather, like your white one, and the sweater coat was a (flow-y) sweater coat, not a big sweater, so more polished. Oh and her boots were heeled booties.

To go one step further, to my eye, because of the discomfort of all the extra fabric squished into the denim jacket arms/armpits/bust area, the look seems pretty contrived. I am on Team Effortless, and yanking on a fitted jacket over a bulky sweater seems anything but effortless - I even hate it when thin sweater sleeves bunch when I stick my arm in a blazer, so I can imagine all the pulling and contorting that would go into this look.

Still, I do like the proportions that you mentioned, as well as the fit-flare effect. Maybe this could be achieved with a fine-gauge sweater with fitted arms and a trapeeze or babydoll cut?

I like it! It's a straightforward cropped-over-long silhouette, no? The different textures make it interesting. I don't really see how her age has anything to do with its success or failure, but maybe I'm just a nut....I also think my eye has totally adjusted to many, many layers after reading and looking at Susie Lau's blog every day.

I'm 100% with, Anna. I like this style on the young lass A LOT! But can barely see it working on anyone but a teen or 20 year old in as a casual and distressed manner.

However, the concept could work with more sophisticated pieces. So I hear Jonesy too.

Angie, are you with Anna in saying that she's getting away with a fashion crime but it's pardonable because she's young and gorgeous, or do you mean that you truly like this look for someone this age? Sorry to be dense!

Also, in general, what about this, other than the casualness and the actual fact that a lot of young people might wear it, makes it a young look in itself?

I like the proportions of this outfit (as others have said, it's your basic crop over tunic/fit n flare) however I don't love this -specific- outfit because the colors, textures and fabric weights don't thrill me. YOUR version of it I like much, much more. Everything I am underwhelmed by in the girl's outfit looks lovely in yours.

Honestly, to my eye, this outfit looks like a happy accident and not at all deliberate. I am pretty sure I wore this exact thing about 20 years ago. And it would have been because I only owned one jacket but it was cold out so I needed to cover my kidneys and bum with a big warm sweater. I was a 100% grunge girl. I should find a picture of myself post-mohawk.

OMG Una! I was perusing the Sart yesterday and noticed this outfit and was drawn to it and bookmarked it for further reflection and to see if there was a way that it could be pulled off for a more "mature person!" Isn't that wild! I have a sleeveless sweater tunic that I was thinking I would try with it. Also I have a lightweight long boyfriend cardigan that I think would be perfect with the denim jacket. I'm going to try it out soon because to me it just looks like fun! AND makes sense for the climate that I live in - we have to dress in layers in the winter because its warm during the day and chilly at night - this jacket over the sweater makes perfect sense to me.

It's a combination. As Anna says, there are lots of young Seattle "street punks" who dress in a similar way and do NOT look edgy, fun and fab. She does. Her nice hair and bag really add to the look, making her visually more fashionable and deliberate.

I think the difference between your look and the girl's look is that you super chic, edgy and age appropriate for you, and she looks adorable and pulled together in a young ingenue way. There is definitely leeway given to the young and gorgeous. . .

I like it--and think it can work on any demographic.
I agree with Andrea about putting together what you have and I have done this for the same reason like this. It's basically what I wear now to pick up the kids at school--a long thick knit cowl neck sweater. I like the tightness feeling.

What the thought about it being specifically a buttoned sweater?
I think this would be cool with the sweater turned around backwards!!!
