This is why I keep my shopping list VERY flexible

Under the Xmas tree this year, I wanted to see a chestnut leather jkt, a bright yellow structured handbag and a gold watch. (Perhaps you can remember the recent blog post on this topic).

Well, no thank you!

- Chestnut leather does not look killer against my skin tone unless it's on my feet. Black still looks a million times better.

- No nice structured and formal yellow handbags around. All too unstructured and casual.

- I do not want a gold watch anymore. Silver looks better and I *do* like it to match my white gold vintage wedding ring.

Angie, I absolutely LOVE that even though you're a professional stylist and a style expert, you're still learning all the time about what looks good on you. It definitely makes me feel reassured in my uncertainty and indecisiveness!

I did give the girls dad a list for me earlier in the year, but have just given him a revised list as well LOL

But this kind of thing happens to me whenever I go shopping for specific things - like my recent denim skirt hunt - I find that what is available isn't to the standard I want, so I cross it off my "Current Search" list and just add it to my mental list of things to buy if I ever stumble across the perfect version.

I thought I was going to buy a Chanel bag for myself (I'm graduating from graduate school in a couple weeks), but now I may just go for a set of Demeyere pans. The bag I like is *gulp* $4k. I srsly cannot spent that kind of money on a handbag!

I've had a black leather moto jacket on my radar for forever but have recently let that one go. Of course, if the perfect one happens to cross my path, I'll be happy to snatch it up, but I've decided to broaden my criteria for my black jacket.

Yes, I removed a bracelet from my list after I wore one to work and it kept banging against my laptop. Accessories that annoy me are not fab, no matter how beautiful.

The only fashion item on my list this year is black patent leather pumps. To replace another pair. I can be sure that I won't be changing my mind.

Angie, I agree about the ring/watch. My wedding bands are white gold and while I still wear yellow gold I'll only wear a silver watch because they are so close together.

I posted a while back about looking for skinny cargos and floral blouses for summer - and then discovered that the skinny cargos in my price range all look terrible on me. So now I've shifted my attention to skirts and day dresses instead

It's good to be flexible, especially for adventurous dressers like yourself, Angie. Gives you much more room for experimentation.

I have to be VERY flexible, because I know I'll never get what I ask for.

My dad does not buy gifts, ever. He is an utter scrooge and proud of it.

My mom has good intentions and she tries, but I never end up being able to keep what she gets and she would never be willing to get me anything I actually wanted. I sent her a link to the Haflinger slippers and she had a meltdown at the idea of spending $70 on slippers. She described it as "morally wrong." Mind you, they were on sale for $40 at the time I sent the link. I ended up buying them myself and they ended up being too big anyway, so that put an end to that.

My brother does not deal with fashion-related gifts. Last year I got assorted loose teas and the year before I got an iPhone, so they're certainly fabulous gifts and I was happy to receive them, but they weren't on a pre-determined wish list or anything. He is definitely the most talented gift giver in our family though.

I wish I could have asked for the S&K coat, but I think the price would have caused a death in the family.

Isabel, you're sweet and I replied to your separate thread.

Auburn, as beautiful as the Hermes bags are, they don't light my fire. Too stiff and classic for my tastes. Even though a Chanel bag is also very classic - it's more funky somehow but I can't articulate why. I'm more into Prada, Burberry, and Valentino handbags when it comes to high end stuff. Sort of pretty with a fun modern touch sans the hardware. Always clean and crisp. Does that make sense?

I LOVE the Brahmin bags! I got 2 within the past year and have worn them soooo many times! They are so incredibly well-made and sturdy enough to be a 'everyday' bag....definitely worth the money!

I haven't changed my mind about my list lately because it is all fantasy at this moment anyway--my extra $$ has to go to other things for now. However I find it very interesting to read about your changes. I am kind of sorry to lose you as a chestnut/gold pal, but I can see your point about what looks best/fits your style best.

Oh, I must have missed it where you said you were not wearing gold anymore, Angie. That's too bad. I'm actually surprised. I can't picture silver looking better on you than gold, since you are so bright and warm toned. Guess it's ultimately how you feel about it though.

I have to admit your original wish list nearly had me fall off my breakfast stool, I'm hoping Burberry does have a handbag for you as structured yellow is the perfect compliment for your style right now.

Quite right, Julie. Maya, have not sworn off gold completely. I still really like it against my skin tone! Just don't want a gold watch next to my white gold wedding ring. We all have our quirks.

DH is wanting a wish list and I haven't found anything to put on it. I'd love to find a structured bag with the big old-fashioned double-knob clasp on top. I saw one that was thousands of $$$. The flat boots with the right calf size haven't turned up yet unless I get a slouchy fit. I'd better come up with ideas or I'll end up with a new vaccum cleaner or something.

Angie I am the same way. Both my watches are steel bands which go better with my white gold wedding band then a yellow gold band would. I did change one gift thus far. My long puffer coat. I originally wanted a bright color, but my wool coat is yellow and my trench is pink, so I decided a serious cold weather coat required a serious color and got black. In the end I realized, a good down coat didn't come in any bright colors I liked and I wasn't willing to sacrifice serious warmth for a bright color coat so black it was. Plus, if it's cold enough to wear one, it's probably also nasty out and why bother having to clean a bright color every few wears in the winter. I'll save that for a lighter weight coat which can be worn on sunny days. Let all the slush get on a black coat, see if I care.

I also really like being surprised. The vast majority of my gifts come from my parents (particularly because my husband and I decided not to give gifts in light of our very EXTRAVAGENT honeymoon). I gave my mom a small wishlist, only three non-pricy things on it. So I know I am going to get those and a kitchen scale which was on my wedding registry but we didn't receive. Anything else will be a surprise but if I don't like it, it will be okay because in my immediate family we've always had a policy that it's ok to return.

Perhaps Santa can redirect the chestnut leather jacket to my stocking instead, in a larger size.

My immediate family (four of us) are pretty good gift-givers, but often ask for a list of suggestions or items that are high on our "wish list". It's at least helpful as a starting point, though we always include some surprises for each other.

My wish lists hardly make it into Santa's hands, because I usually find great deals on the stuff I want before anyone asks me for a list. Either that, or someone gets me an "early" present in July when we're out shopping together... works for me!
