Amazing what people can assume. This came up a few times over the years with my pixie. I usually heard about it second hand, wasn't asked directly. (You haven't seen my photo, but I am very feminine looking and otherwise dressed).

Have had similar issues (different connotations culturally, but equally rude comments on the whole), but hey, it's my head, my hair, and I keep going back to a crop and a shave every so often.

And I guess I don't look very feminine either, but that's neither here nor there. I don't have a lot of style, forget style confidence; but I do know when to call it 'none of your beeswax!' (even if I don't say it out loud).

It is very peculiar what people can assume about you based on your appearance.

The one time I had a short pixie cut following a hair dye disaster, customers in the store where I worked kept calling me "sir". Now granted, in my crappy khakis+polo shirt uniform I didn't look especially feminine, but I have never had a particularly boyish body either, if you catch my drift...

When I'm wearing scrubs, people say, "What a nice gentleman doctor." ... or "Your medical student is such a nice guy staying up to help you..."

Mmm, yeah. The mind boggles.

And what if the person questioned actually IS a lesbian? Will the world implode? Has Portia de Rossi's hair been for naught?

Or imagine if that person was in fact going through chemo.

I'm thinking my response would be to chirp brightly, "Why yes, I am. Fortunately, my husband is okay with it!" Said with the sweetest smile I could manage.

@Una, I tactually thought this was going to be a post about chemo treatments.

Nothing should ever be assumed! I saw an attractive bald woman in the choir in the coverage of Whitney Houston's funeral and I wondered what her story was. I'm glad that women are feeling empowered to go short or bald these days, whether it is a fashion statement, or because of medical issues (and not feel like they *must* wear a wig or cover their heads) or for any other number of reasons. Everyone is so beautiful in her own way.

And this assumption is particularly absurd. Can you imagine asking a lesbian if she was now heterosexual because she grew her hair or donned a long wig?

I look pretty masculine with short hair. I remember very clearly 20 years ago in Italy, when I saw a reflection in a bus window and thought "What a cute boy!" - AND IT WAS ME. And when I was in NYC with my short crop I used to get handed fliers for strip clubs. Of course, this was both with different glasses frames. Oh well. At least I thought I was cute, right?

For the record, I got hit on by women many more times when I had long hair.

Older men (50-90) love me in short hair and I always get fabulous compliments about looking like a "lady."

I get a lot of the lesbian comments no matter my hair length-- I'm not sure why . . .

I've learned to take advantage of it-- friends often take me out with them as their "date" when their significant others are out of town or they don't want to be bothered. Apparently I make an intimidating lover. I also get bought drinks at the "colorful" clubs quite frequently.

Occasionally I use my theatrical training and throw in a stage kiss to seal the deal when men are being quite persistent with unwanted attention.

I'd better watch out. If Emma was asked that because of her cut, Angie will be crowning me Queen Lesbian due to mine. Then again, my boyfriend might enjoy being my consort.

PS. Both men and women have bought me drinks since I went short. Women make much more civilized propositions, though.
