So I was perusing the June InStyle.
They featured a spread on nine distinct white dresses from one designer for my summer. BTW they all looked short.
I don't have nine weekends this summer.
For beach to cocktails, wear a caftan.
Yes, because my life is spent in a upscale resort.
There was a feature of matching your nail polish to your cell phone case. Nice high-low of featuring a $1450 Chanel phone carrier with a $5 Revlon nail polish.
In my life a manicure lasts less than 24 hours. My cell phone case is an OtterBox Defender, because I have a tendency to drop my phone and don't like cracks in it.
Also a starlet had a recipe for a natural lip stain. Roast a beet for 30-50 minutes, cool and use as a lip stain.
Yes, this is how I want to spend my summer, in the kitchen roasting winter root vegetables for a beauty trick.

Ahh no wonder print fashion magazines are floundering.

Hey if you eat the beet you will not only stain your lips!

There is nothing realistic about what they're selling here but sometimes I wonder if that isn't the point. Would people really want to read about my need for sensible underwear, what brand of nail clippers I prefer, the best way to get the dirt from underneath my toenails during gardening season, etc? Maybe what they're selling is that fantasy life we can only dream of? Just a thought.

BTW my grandmother (the one who taught me the potato shoe stretch tip) used beet juice as lip stain and mixed it with a tiny bit of olive oil as blush during World War II and just kept doing it afterwards.

I'm more worried about what these mags tout as 'fact'. I recall Mademoiselle saying to rub your beauty cream up or in circles, but only down with your foundation so your skin wouldn't soak it in. yeah, because your epidermis is directional in its emollient seeking properties. Sheesh.

Be sure to roast the beets while wearing one of your white dresses. Peel with your freshly manicured nails! Take photos of the result, but do not drop your phone!

But don't worry about the dress -- you have another white one to put on, after all.

I love InStyle! I flip through and look at all the pretty pictures then recycle it. At least it takes longer to look through than the 5 minutes I spend with Lucky every month.

Thanks for a good laugh. They forgot to tell you that you can stain your lips a deep blue just by eating a bunch of frozen blueberries. No roasting needed. Don't ask why I know this ( but didn't know it in time to avoid embarrassing situations)

Ever since I read that study that reading fashion mags makes your self esteem drop (and felt inside myself that it was true) I have rationed myself carefully!

I grabbed a UK Glamour in Spain and really enjoyed most of it. Seemed to have more substance than my usual reads.

Ummm..... We had roasted beetroot in a salad for dinner this evening...... (Baby spinach, feta, walnuts, extra virgin olive oil) with beef steak and roasted potatoes...... My lips are all taproot stained and I'm ready to go!! Mwah! Giggle giggle!

Too freakin' funny! It's the fashion/style equivalent of Martha Stewart Living magazine, imho. "Make your next party the talk of the town..." with all these tips for tedious handmade things that only someone like Martha and her staff of 20 have time to do. I was always, like, who the heck has time for all this crap in real life?

I call my InStyle app on my tablet my "mindless gym reading" --lots of pretty pictures, no real substance that requires the actual reading of anything, which is pretty damned handy as you're cruising along on the elliptical or cardiowave --hard to focus your eyes on actual text while doing that.

...and I'm SO with you on the otterbox phone case. I drop that sucker like 10x a day. While I love aesthetics, function will always win over it (e.g I love the look of jumpsuits, but I am SO unwilling to have to disrobe completely simply to use the bathroom. No matter how cool the jumpsuit is).

...and were it not for gel manicures, which last 2-3 weeks without chipping, you'd never see nail polish on my hands. Cuz I am HARD on my hands and regular polish chips in less than a day --and I don't have the time, patience, or inclination to do that shit myself. I'd rather go naked (nails!) If Im ever in the position where I need to pare back expenses, those lovely gel manicures are gonna be the first to go.

I think we have all discovered that we are more practical (and probably smarter) than most starlets and fashion magazine writers!

That should boost our self esteem today!

Is "beach to cocktails" something that comes up regularly in anyone's life? Where "cocktails" doesn't mean a bright pink frozen daiquiri somewhere where you're dressed up if you've bothered to put a coverup over your bathing suit?
