The WhoWhatWear are calling these type heels grandma heels and are supposed to be trending this spring. Not the mary jane style-just the heel style, shown on several pairs. I have a pair of pumps with this type of heel (mine are black with gold plated heels) that I have been wearing for about three years-boy am I ahead of the trend!

Grandma heels?? That block heel is straight out of the 1960s. Epitome of Mod. Too funny! But how fun to be ahead of the trend!

I'm going to refer to what I said on Joy's thread and say that it's far easier to look fashionable wearing a trend like "Grandma heels" if one is many, many years or decades away from actually being a grandma.

The closer you are to "Grandma age," the harder you will have to work to make a trend like this look convincingly stylish when it's new.

Once you reach a certain age (and I'm speaking as someone who is in the grandma age bracket) until any "grandma trend" becomes mainstream fashion, unless you're known as a style icon, you will be perceived as, well, a grandma.

If you're Anna Wintour, people will perceive whatever you do as fashionable, including grandma heels. If you're the average woman of Anna Wintour's age -- grandma.

I agree with April. Or - the colour and fabric/type of leather has to be so far away from Grandma to remove all doubt. Like the peach coloured velvet number you posted above:)

Those are totally grandma heels (thick, sensible, sturdy!), but I still love them. Perhaps the trick is to wear them with an outfit that doesn't say "grandma" in other ways.

Oh April, I could not imagine grandma heels reading at all grandma on you, or Lisa or Joy.

I totally understand your point of view but at 38 a small voice is screaming inside of me, I hope when I am old enough to be a grandma that I have the confidence to be able to break some conventions. I feel that if am dressed appropriately in terms of the season and level of formality and a new take on old trend brings Joy then why should I second guess this?

I wish I could fast forward twenty years to see if I feel the same or if I would look back at my youthful optimism with a knowing smile.

Regardles, my answer to granny shoes yay or nay is a resounding happy feet tapping yay.

Aw, thanks R and J. But I assure you (and my highly critical teenaged son assures you) that I have reached the age where the grandma potential of clothing is a serious style threat.

We went to a wedding last fall and I wore these shoes because I can't wear serious heels or pointy toes anymore for a number of (grandma) reasons. I could not shake the feeling that they were super dowdy.

Their block heel and retro style may be all the rage within a few months, but at the start of this trend, on me, TO me, they read "grandma."

And after the wedding, they went straight to the consignment pile.

Ha - RoseandJoan - I am almost that 20 year older version you are talking about, and trust me the eye changes and what is ironic and hip at 38 , isn't so much that in one''s mid 50's. Reread April's comment and notice she said it gets harder to make the look "New' and trendy vs something you never got around to getting rid of 20 years ago.

My great-grandmother, and my sixth-grade teacher both wore shoes with this type of heel, but without the Mary Jane straps. I think they were Ferragamos or at least, Ferragamo knock-offs. Sometimes I loved them, and sometimes I rolled my eyes at them (the shoes, and the women ), but I was always intrigued by the style. I've had a sugar-eye for this style most of my life. I think because, when they wore them, they always seemed so lady-like and dressed up.

The Mary Jane style looks like dance shoes, to my eye. I have a pair of Bloch tap shoes that are very similar in style, and I love them.

So yes. I think of them as "Gram shoes" (ballerinas with a block heel) or "dance shoes" (Mary Janes with a block heel). And I wear my Vara knockoffs with great pleasure But I wear mine with jeans and a leather moto or sporty luxe zip-jacket.
