There is NOTHING wrong with dressing well!

It doesn't mean you're insecure, or having a crisis, or an affair, or getting divorced, or dying, or anything else. Or that you're pregnant, in love, or suddenly rich. It means you enjoy dressing well. Anyone who thinks otherwise - well, who cares what they think?

Just putting it out there.

Yeah... I was trying to think of *something* positive associated with looking good! Everyone seems to be getting all these negative connotations. But people looking lovely can have *happy* reasons too!

here's the funny thing IK... when I first got pregnant with #2, I did focus on wearing all my favorites knowing that they'd soon be pushed to the back of my closet, and someone at work did say something along the lines of "wow, pregnancy is really doing wonders for your wardrobe" .. I don't remember her exact words, it was 18 years ago, but I remember exactly where the conversation took place. She meant it as a positive thing, but I remember not being sure how to take it. It did get me thinking how I need to not put off wearing my faves...

Dressing is a social act that is to be enjoyed by those who care about the creative process. At the end of the day, it's as simple as that!

I'm sad that so many members have had negative things said to them about their clothing. This has been a topic on the forum before, too. Personally, I've never gotten anything but compliments. I used to work with a man who was extremely quiet and serious and once he commented on my dress. He said it was very "military." But I knew that by even commenting on my outfit at all, he was really trying to be nice, so I interpreted it as a compliment. I told him thanks, I like structured stuff. Maybe I have been getting non-compliments all along but always interpreting them positively. : D

I haven't received any negative comments, either, Ana. Nor do I get very many positive comments. Most people in my life, apart from husband and daughter, don't seem to notice the changes at all! Though I do notice that different people will look at me when I am out shopping and in general the sales clerks have a different attitude when they see me come in. Maybe I look like someone who might actually make a purchase!

Of course I'm still very much a work in progress and don't think I've nailed my style by any stretch of the imagination.

Because I mostly wear jeans (albeit attempted in a smart way), I don't get this very often. However, sometimes if I pull out a dress or skirt, I get a comment like this. Even when I make pains to casual-ize the look.

I don't take the "where are you going you are so dressed up" comment lightly. I take it that, in some way, I have failed. That I have either thrown on too much stuff, or I am over-dressed for the occasion, which I dislike. I haven't gotten one of these since the summer, happily. (When I last wore a dress for a casual occasion.)

So even though these comments can be hurtful, I have taken them as learning occasions.

What? No! Of course it doesn't mean you're insecure! On the contrary, actually, in some cases. If you have the guts to take fashion risks, I think it's a sign that you're pretty confident.

An employee who is dressing nicer and handing in dental claim forms is looking for another job. ;+)

My friend now says thing like this is your look, this is so you, this is what you'd wear--I know you're dressing better don't think I haven't noticed , you're getting all girly on me...and has said some nice things TOO LOL---I am just trying to evolve (north of 45) and feel a little more self worth--even tho I don't dress quite so nice as you ladies--just a little different than my usual--with a larger repertoire.

I used to worry so much about what people said - positive or negative. But I'm learning that if I feel good in what I'm wearing, that's all that really matters.

Of course, constructive comments from folks on YLF are different - they help me learn and I don't take those comments in any hurtful way at all.

This is GREAT, IC ! I was also relieved that the Queen was not pregnant......unless it is a girl this time.

I have to tell you that it was a near-death experience that brought me to YLF and to the conclusion that I don't really care if someone judges me. I am vain enough to think that if they meet me and talk to me, that they will realize I am an ok person ! ( The joke around here was that after be given 14 blood transfusions in 36 hours, I must have gotten a fashionista's blood.....whoever you are.....thank you ! )

I get this all the time at work, "are you going on an interview?" Any day I wear a skirt or dress and even most days with blazers. Mind you, I wear blazers at least 3 to 4 days a week, so it's a joke at work that's gotten old. I just smile, say "I'm just cold" and leave it at that. After all I am typically wearing a blazer with jeans!

Funny read Ladies 10 months ago we moved to a regional centre in Victoria and when we are out and about on the weekends people have assumed we are visiting from "the City" lol .

The other day I was in town and greeted a couple who's daughter went to school with DD13. Both girls are in secondary school now and we don't see each other often. The lady turned her head, blinked and greeted back 'Hi! You look great!' It made my day.
I am not surprised I get more compliments from people who haven't seen me in a while than from family and people who I see on a regular basis: these people see me all along the transformation and to them it is not such a great change, every day or every week a tiny bit, rather than the huge contrast between short haired frumpy mom and long haired, thinner, better dressed mom
