'Themes' for S/S

Since Christmas I've been trying to get a handle on trends for S/S 2019, but I'm at a loss. I came across this statement in a home decor magazine 2019 trends edition. When interviewed, the designer Jonathan Adler said:

"Style is a reflection of culture and culture is more chaotic than ever, so there are billions of trends. Nothing's 'out', nothing is bad - it's just a lot of options. Think of trends as a salad bar: you pick and choose to create your personal style."

(Sounds a lot like Angie, eh?) The article and magazine did go on to identify 12 'themes' in interior design and decor for 2019 with a common thread that they are 'exuberant and colourful'.

I'm seeing COLOURFUL in the resources I'm looking at for clothing fashions, and still the Wild West influence (fringes and boots). High waists are mentioned a lot on this forum, but I'm having trouble identifying any other trends or themes for S/S.

What trends are worth experimenting with in S/S 2019?

This is so interesting. I will be curious to see where this discussion goes.

For myself, I feel that I need to get clearer on what MY themes are for Spring (not specifically for 2019 but more generally, how I want my wardrobe to be across years). Then I will be better able to pick and choose from the trends that are available.

I think Angie’s trend list usually comes out in February, so we can look forward to that!

For me, I’m leaning towards ethical minimalism for my summer wardrobe, which I do see as a trend, though hopefully a long-term one. In my head, what that means is purchasing well-made, versatile pieces with some design longevity (either classic or avant-garde), and with an eye towards sustainability. I think it’s possible to do that with a good dose of fun and a nod towards more overt trends, especially when maintaining a small wardrobe and wearing the heck out of things!

I was searching colour trends the other day to get some ideas about new combinations.... Lots of colours, among others a lot of yellow and orange. Also a lot of beige outfits.
I am really looking forward to Angie’s trend report.

I'm working through the shows and trends for 2019 now. Chaos, Colour and Pattern jump right out. You have to pick the way YOU want to organize the chaos. It's all good.

If the melting pot continues, at some point, trends aren't going to mean much.....

I like the idea of a palm / green / leafy influenced summer style...I am thinking of your t shirt from the mens dept. Is that a leafy print?

I’m inspired by KL’s Chanel collections for Spring/Summer 2019. I’m loving the soft, loose look of the skirts and the dresses with the small details such as smocking, lace, piping, and fluttering under layers peeking out when the wearer moves. I’m also a big fan of the nautical elements he has woven into the collections, along with his take on stripes and geometrical patterns. The colors are also wonderful ranging from delicate pastels to stronger tones of cobalt, blacks, and pure white.

A pair of white shoes, some sparkly pins, and a long, floaty striped skirt are on my radar for SS2019. And maybe a loose pant in a geometric print in cobalt/black/white/yellow to wear with white, collarless jacket? Even the infamous bike shorts look appealing—maybe lengthen to a cropped black skinny worn with a black top and a breezy blue/white striped topper with a defined shoulder and oversized sleeves?

Thanks, Karl, for helping me fall in love with spring/summer dressing this year! (But I will be skipping the huge Chanel logos and the doubled shoulder bags—got to leave something for the youngsters. )

SarahD8 - I've had almost a year of retirement and 2 closet edits, so my basic style is sorted (casual, classic, slightly sporty neutrals with a pop of red). I don't need much, either, but I'm looking for that 'dose of fun' - thanks Jenn!

LaPed and Jane - Yes to natural motifs! I do have that green leaf motif T still. It's a little too cold for bare arms at the moment, but will be in rotation come summer.

Katerina - I like the idea of beige (to bookend my hair And orange and yellow sounds both fun and happy.

Racheylou - ladylike AND hectic, like advanced style - or ladylike/feminine (as described by Gaylene), and hectic as a separate look?

Sal - like fuller leg trousers, crops, and coulottes?

FI - I guess sorting out S/S weather in Berlin will be key.

Yes I think so - or midi skirts? That is what I have added this summer here and I think it will all be fab again next summer.

I’m seeing it as more ‘Advanced Style Lite.’ Gucci had a look I really liked... it was actually a very-Chanel matching ensemble, with contrast trim, of cropped flares, tunic, and jacket. I don’t know if you see what I mean by hectic... the contrast is strong and you’ve got three different hemlines... but still, alone each item is pretty ladylike.

I think Sally is on the money.

One major retailer here has made a feature of chocolate brown. That's the first time I've seen that here in years.

I would like to see more timeless, olde world inspired patterns. Like quatrefoil, fleur de lis, persian, florentine - because it goes with one of "my" themes for 2019, ha ha. I got this green jacquard tee from Zara and its the sort of pattern that I'd like to see more of. Florals, dots and checks are still dominating here.

I am seeing a little more brown, especially tan and botanical prints and sunset colors, including pinks and purples.

Interesting! I do think the the re-emergence of warm colors (as Brooklyn and Katerina mentioned) is a big one. Higher waists - waists are the new hemline!

I've also seen wider full-length pant legs and lots of cargo pants.

So far I’m seeing bright colours worn head to toe.Oranges and earth tones are in the mix but by no means exclusive.I think the midi length for skirts and dresses is a continuing trend as are wide leg cropped trousers.
There seem to be more jumpsuits around as well.

Cargo pants and I could not be happier. Aside from the velvet and satin pair that I should not have purged, I kept every pair. They are, by far, my favorite go to bottoms.

ETA: Not skinny cargos, the wider the leg the better.

Australian fashion is 6 months behind/ahead of the Northern Hemisphere. Mainly behind, but sometimes ahead... this is what I have enjoyed this season:

Midi lengths are in strong supply
Suits are back
Strong tailoring

For me, going into winter, I am looking for elegance and a pared back look, away from maximal style. Classic styling is looking fresh to me.
