The weather has been a big news story over the holiday season. Sorel winter boots are lined up by the door, with wool and puffers being derigeur for anyone venturing out of doors. I understand a winter storm is bearing down on the east coast of North America, while frigid temps hold central North America hostage. However, it looks like there will be some respite from the cold temps next week....

What is it like where you live?

Forecast and pics Jan. 5 in the early evening. (I live 100Km east of Toronto, Ontario, Canada on the shores of Lake Ontario.)

Currently 8F, feels like -13F. With a foot of snow on the ground. Commute home tonight was ... unpleasant.

Photo 2 is from this morning, and #3 from yesterday during the blizzard.

Today . But look! Shorts weather for the weekend !! Winnipeg , MB Dead centre ( latitude) of Canada, 90 km North of the CA/US border .

Was in a suburb north of Chicago for Christmas--lowest was -13° wind chill the day we got in to 8°. And it got colder after we left. Back home in our corner of SF Bay Area it has average a high of 65°--warmer than normal for this time of year. I worry the shrubs and trees will break blossoms too soon and then we'll be hit by a frost.

Some of family went to Niagara Falls after Christmas--okay with them--it was 10° warmer there than Chicago area.

Definitely crazy.

Lovely day here, after some hot ones. 13 to 30 C. I went Kneeboarding for the first time ever yesterday and camping earlier in the week in a national park by a river.
My Canadian rellies arrived the other day. What a contrast!

Mr SF informed me last night that it was colder than Mars here. Today when I woke up it was -29 C and -41 C with the wind chill.

I live 2 hours north of Toronto.

Just like Diana, but a bit colder. I live about an hour west of Boston. Currently 2 F ("feels like -14 with wind chill). A foot foot of show plus much larger piles from snow plows. Temps going down for the next 48 hours but it's supposed to get above freezing next week. Boots and coats lined up like Runcarla said. I ventured out for a walk yesterday and wore jeans, thermal top, wool sweater, puffer vest, fleece jacket, puffer coat, scarf, neck gaiter, 2 hats (one was bright orange but not warm, wore so I'd be visible but needed a warmer one underneath), boots, ski gloves, socks, ...I swear it took me longer to get dressed than the amount of time I actually spent walking. !!!

Angie you asked how we do it....well, we could all move I suppose. I go out in all kinds of weather because I get very stir crazy otherwise. And you can't beat the bragging rights, although I will never win against our Canadian fabbers

We had plans to go tobogganing with friends this morning but the youngest one is 3 and we thought better of it. They are coming to our place for homemade banana bread and warm beverages instead!

nothing compared to many of you...but very cold for us...andi'm terrified of frozen pipes, it happned to one of the units in our building during the polar vortex about 4 years ago and it was messy and the rest of the building was without hot water for about 16 hours.

i do wonder how in the world did our ancestors survive before central heating! it makes me realize how spoiled i am

A projected 26c high today. I’ll wear booties, ponte pants and a short sleeve tee, bringing along a jacket when I go out for a cooler evening (maybe 18c).

You what is still so interesting and amazing to me - is that we all adapt to wear we live or where we grew up in terms of the weather. Our friends in the southern hemisphere happily live in 30C weather for months and months on end, which I could no more conceive of than you can of us living in more northern climes. Clear, cold , crisp , bright air is one of the most beautiful things nature can provide. It's so pure. No, it's not comfortable for long periods, and it does make one want to hibernate, but so does hot, humid air in the southern parts of the world. This has been an unusual past 3-4 weeks in Canada though - it is not normally this cold.

Here in Europe we have just wiped the storm Leonore after the wind in my area I saw in the mountains the rain came and actually disappear the snow we are seeing the rivers out of their beds the Doubs is in flood is very impressing.

Salut Bernard! I didn’t know you were in that part of France. I just got a call from my dear “second mother” who lives about two hours from there, near Aarau, CH. Wish I’d known to ask her about flooding.

Here in Tampa, the weather is still slightly cooler than usual, but returning to normal soon. I’ve enjoyed the respite from the usual temps—the long summers here, with low 90s (mid 30s) every day really do me in! Similar to kkards, I often wonder how people lived here before AC (short answer: the development of central AC brought a huge building boom here).

Unseasonably warm and humid since a few days. Grey gloomy sky, drizzle. Very November-like. Today 8 degrees C. Location: Northern Italy, Milan and outskirts.

I sure can't compete in the Snow Stakes or race to the bottom of the thermometer. But I can share some interesting graphics!

#1: The high temperatures over the last couple weeks, in Fahrenheit. (Note: the graphic should say "Average" or "Mean," not "Normal.")

#2: The record-holder was my first winter on this earth. We have snapshots of me toddling around in the snow, wearing plastic bread bags on my legs because who has snow boots in Texas? Especially baby-sized??
It was serious cold. Killed a lot of plants, including the entire hedge around my grandparents' yard.

The view from my office window today!

It's currently -15 C and snowy... they're predicting accumulations of 15 cm of snow by tonight. The wind is out of the north at 28 km/hr, gusting to 41 km/hr. This makes it feel like -25 C.

The temperature will drop further tonight, making it feel like -35 C.

Can't wait to get home and sit in front of the fireplace!
