The Trench Plunge--Last-Minute Advice!

Okay, after scouring online for months, weighing pros and cons, examining budgets, reading articles about spending prioritization within fashion, etc. etc, the time has come to take the plunge!! Neiman Marcus is having a promotion where if you spend $1000 on women's clothing, you can get a $150 gift card (or $300 gift card if the purchases include clothing + handbag/shoes].

Which coat would you ultimately go with?

**Note: I have a student lifestyle and will likely head into academia/NGO/corporate world once I get my PhD. Currently live in the Midwest, hail from Ontario, but hope to move to Europe/Middle East for a bit for work. I'm approaching 30, so the term 'student' has a very different connotation than it does for an 18 year-old.

Which coat would YOU recommend? Pick for yourself?
I, 2, or both (if you could afford both)?

Is there any way you can try either of them on? Buy both and return one? Especially with a purchase of this magnitude, one of them needs to feel perfect on you.

I like the contrast trim one, it's the one I would pick!

purely on the consideration of value, longevity and "investment" for the long term...i would go with neither and look for a longer knee length coat especially if you are tall. the shrunken look will date quicker than a classic knee length trench.

if you are committed to picking only from these two, i would go with #1 under duress. i think burberry brit will date faster than the burberry line. also consider barbour, again for longevity and classic styling.

you seem really enamored with the sateen coats. why not get a cheap sateen coat and a more classic gabardine trench at a higher designer price point.

I am with BJ on this; I think a longer coat would be more versatile and wouldn't date as much and if you are spending this kind of money on it, that seems a consideration.

I don't know much about sateen finishes but my concern would be that it might not wear as well as a more classic finish.

I am also shopping for trenches. Alas, I can't spend this much! So I envy you your problem here! Whichever you get, enjoy it. And show us pics!

I would buy the first. It is a very classic piece with some edge and uniqueness. I don't mind the length so much. I have a trench that length and I get allot of wear out of it in the Spring and Fall as a topper.

Out of these two, I would get the first one.

I'll be a "spanner," as Angie says, and go with $2. #1 is more casual, which is nice, but if you want a luxury item, go for one!

The second one leaves me completely cold. The sateen looks cheap to me, even though it is super expensive. So I'd take the first one out of these two.

But my real first choice would be something more classic for that kind of money.

I like #1 the best. Me, I'd buy neither (I don't like beige and they are verrrrry expensive). But on people who look good in beige, #1 would definitely be my choice. Not sure about the longevity of the look, but I find the shorter lengths more flattering (unless you are really tall).

For something that expensive, I wouldn't buy until you've tried them on. It's like a wedding dress. You'll know if it's the one when you put it on. If not, keep looking.
