The Sundance cashmere dress; neckline close-up added

I had to work today and arrived home to this on the steps.

The neckline in the stock photo is so deceiving! It's not a V at all - it's a superlow square scoopneck that would obscene without a cami under it. That said, it is very soft and flowy, and feels like the clothing equivalent of mashed potatoes with gravy.

I don't think I could size down as the shoulders actually fit. This is just about exactly how I'd style it.

Thoughts?
It looks way more voluminous here than in the mirror. The model looks the same, only taller, to my eye. Send it back? Feel like I'm flunking out - and still waffling on the Allsaints Drina in grey.

How do you feel about the layering?

It's not a problem - I usually wear a cami under all my cashmere sweaters to keep from having to wash/dry clean them. And could be fun to wear a colored cami for some brightness. But does it look terrible? I can't figure out why the stock photo looks so different!

It looks great on you and I love the hat with it. Maybe try some textured brighter tights or a substantial necklace piece like the stock photo to jazz it up a bit?

Hmm, I think it looks like a totally different item than in the stock photo. How in the world could those be the same necklines? I loved the Allsaints dress on you, but honestly, I'm not feeling this one. I find the shape too swingy, if that makes any sense.

The neckline gives me pause. Otherwise I like it. The cami is needed but it doesn't look quite right. Maybe it's too much cami showing or the square shape. It's not terrible, it just seems off.
Wearing a cami with a V neck seems like it would be fine.

Would it be worth it to call or email them about the neck shape? Maybe there are other styles available. Wearing a cashmere dress would be like floating on a fluffy cloud through the day.

The two necklines don't look the same at all - maybe they have it bunched up around the shoulders and that pushes the neckline into a V. Honestly, I am not loving this one on you - a bit too wide I think. I like the Allsaints much better.

Sometimes you have to choose between comfort and figure flattery. I think you can rock this with sleek boots. I do wonder what will happen to it if you smoosh it under a jacket.

Very weird about the neckline. There's also a rough edge seam near the shoulder on the model that I don't see on yours. Seems like a different dress entirely.

I think the model in the Sundance photo has virtually no bust and there is a heavy pendant in the area of what would be her cleavage...this gives the impression of a different neckline. Well...I dunno, this is what it looks like to me...

I think its too much Cami show. You would have to layer this over a Turtle neck which is the best I can think of for your style. Not very sure of a button down and if it suits your style persona. But other than that I seem to like the dress. It suits you IMO.

Eh, I'm a big pass vote on this one. The layering, the neck shape, the volume in the sleeves as well as the length... too much is iffy to my eye. You have much better stuff already.

I want to call Sundance just to find out if they Photoshoped that neckline. It looks so comfy though. I'm not sure enough to vote on this one

Is the model wearing the dress backwards?

If not, it is a different dress that they sent you. I have noticed this before. I imagine the sample dress came early for when the catalog was being created. In the meantime, the manufacturer half way around the world had a different vision.

I wouldn't keep it, it looks too different than the catalog.

I cannot understand the neckline situation. It is going back along with the galaxy moto, but I am so disappointed as it is truly comfortable and soft and easy to wear. Feeling aggravated.

Denise, you may be right. The neckline is so odd, at first I thought it was a back cutout.

Aww too bad -- if the neckline wasn't so weird I would say keep! I love the long pleats that form in the skirt of the dress.

I just instinctively like the AllSaints dress on you more, quite separate from my feelings on this one. If you are choosing between the two, my vote would be for AS.
As for the neckline issue, it just maddens me that they would not showcase an item the way it is likely to look IRL! So frustrating!

I think you made the right choice. Something is off about that dress, from the neckline to the volume at the bottom.

Una - did you try the EF Merino dress? I know the cut is simpler but it has that flowy volume, high low hem, which moves beautifully and the sleeves are more fitted so you can layer. It has a high wide neckline, I wear a cami, but you don't have to for modesty. Don't know if that would work for you. But I have that dress in black & gray and they are work horses.

Just chiming back in - you might try it in the smaller size. In the stock photo, it looks like the dress isn't spread out like it is in your photo. It appears to be pushed up on the shoulder line, which would form a V neckline and cause the front to fold in more, like it does in the stock photo. The shoulders might not be too small in the smaller size. If shipping is free, I'd try it - the dress looks so cute and comfy in the ad.

So I just went back to the site and saw that another reviewer posted about the same issue, so I don't think a size down will help. At least it's not just me who was misled by the catalog photo. I posted a review as well which they will hopefully put up.

Griffin, I like the EF dress but her stuff rarely works on me for some reason. I think I tried the dress or something similar at Nordstrom and it looked terrible.

Una - don't know if something like this would appeal to you. Kind of like the James Perse sweatshirt dress but it's got pockets. Is that too similiar or were you looking for warmer? Got good reviews. Good luck on the hunt!!

I say keep perservering. You will find the right one. This is nice but it's not 'great' for you. There are some elements here that are not reading "Una" to me.

AG, if you are looking for cashmere dresses, I've seen nice ones from Vkoo, Christopher Fischer, and TSE.

Glad you decided to return it; I think you have styled it as cool as it can be styled, and the proportions look off. Way too much volume on you, imo, and/or misplaced volume. Here's hoping you find a good alternative!
