Many years ago I used to wonder how the young women calmly walked around downtown in pretty cloth coats when I would be freezing. Thinsulate lining! Also, an older friend I had at the time used to take her cloth coats to the tailor and have a lambswool interlining put it.
My first colored coat was bought right off the mannequin when a family friend took me out shopping on a weekend away from school. Hot pink with asymmetrical closing and big gumball buttons. Never had dreamed of a colored coat. Wore it practically to shreds since Philadelphia was extra sooty and dirty and it needed constant dry cleaning.
Walking around Manhattan with my cousin he remarked, "Everybody's staring at you." I was startled. He added that they'd never seen anyone in a coat like that.
