The Quest Begins: my search for black boots

Need a sturdy, classic, winterproof, mid-heel, easy-on/off, all-purpose, knee-high or so black leather boot for my skinny calves.

What do we think of these? Could it be that easy?!

They look good. Is the sole too 'chunky' or is that ok for what you want them for? If they tick all the boxes definitely worth a try.

They look like a great choice for wearing with skirts, tucking jeans, etc. They remind me a bit of my Fryes, which get a LOT of wear and seem to go with everything and dress up or down. I like 'em!

Love those! I prefer a chunky or wedge heel in the winter. It makes me feel less dressed up in a sea of people wearing Uggs yet still gives me some height and class to my outfit. Hope they work for you! Looks like they have some tread on the bottom too? Important!

I like them a lot and find Timberland a good brand. You should give them a try. Do you do 3" heels? My limit is usually 2.5" for boots. They are $10 less on Endless with 10% rebates from mrrebates right now (if that sort of thing matters)

Is shaft height measured with or without heel? I think I'm going to give them a try - I might as well take the plunge somehow...

I don't mind chunky soles as long as I can dress them up a little - the only way to know if to try them out, I guess.

Jjsloane, they have a half-inch platform which hopefully brings them to 2.5", the best height for me (or lower)...

Do you have DSW? I tried these on and they look amazing...like wearing leggings and boots in one. You can also fold over the top a bit, although , now that I think about it, they are probably too tall for you. I'll post the link in case anyone else with 13 inch calves is looking for a pair. The only reason i didn't get them is that I really want a pair of grey.

Joy, I never even considered DSW - thought it was just a store. Now I've joined and ordered something already. Gah!

Can you tell me more about how it works? Is it just a discount site, or does it have an in-house brand? They seem to have shoes that are still current on endless and Zappos.

We think they look very, very nice ~ so nice in fact, that even though "we" don't need any more black boots, "we" have just put them into "our" shopping cart. Just saying.

Sparky, we just pulled the trigger. What cinched it is that I saw wide sizes - so I was able to order my true size, 5.5 C/D. They are $20 cheaper on endless for some reason...

Yay, glad you ordered them! That takes the pressure off me. I should really be holding out for my dream cognac boots, which I know are out there, somewhere. Then again, I just finished a glass of wine, so who knows what that will lead to. Can't wait to hear what you think of them when they arrive! (Off to go check Endless to see if there are any reviews there yet.)

Una, did you notice that the calf circumference is listed as 14.5" on Endless? They don't say what size boot that measurement is taken from. Lack of consistency in these kinds of measurements is one of my pet peeves. I guess you will find out in a couple days which site gives a more accurate #!

I hate that too. I hope that the smaller the foot size, the smaller the circumference. Will let you know when they arrive!

Fingers crossed for you, Una! Experience says that shoe sites are notoriously inaccurate about calf circumference, but maybe this year they are responding to customer frustration and trying to correct that issue.

Una, I always go for a 6 in boots, that way you can wear socks in winter. I am a 5 1/5 in sandals and heels usually.

Good luck with the boot search. It was a long one for me. When I found a pair of boots that were perfect for me, I just tried to duplicate the measurements in circumference and shaft height. I searched all over, by the end not really even looking at cost because I was so frustrated. I ended up finding the perfect pair on ebay. It was risky but I had my measurements in hand and I finally pulled the trigger. They ended up being the perfect black boots. I hope the ones from DSW work out for you. I like some of the stuff on their website but the store always seems like last season's rummage sale to me. I hardly ever find anything there

Rita, like everything else it was a lot easier to buy boots pre-YLF! Now I have Standards with a capital S, which are making me Exceedingly Picky. That's a good thing, but it sure does complicate the searching!

I'm actually a size 5, so I hope 5.5 in a wide will work. I do need to wear socks in winter, though!

They are awesome. My calf is 14 and they fit perfectly for wearing tights. I won't be able to get jeans in them, but that's fine by me. Could be they'd work for you.

I also have a pair of Timberlands (the lexxis boot) and I love it. Comfortable. Has worn well.

EDIT: I'm 12 1/2" calf on a good day - 12 1/4" when I'm not running
