The perfect color for trench?

Hi Angie and All,

Angie, I've been secretly adored your site for a while, and really enjoy reading your and everyone else's fashion tips and discussion.
Currently I plan to invest my first trench coat, but is caught in the sea of different basic colors: black, navy(indigo, or blackwatch navy), beige(or stone?), red...etc.
If this is going to be the first one, what color would you suggest? I really like the BR classic trench coat for spring (particularly the black watch navy), and wonder that whether it is a safe and fashionable choice...

Thank you for the compliments. The colour of your first trench coat really depends on your complexion and your lifestyle. Trench coats come in a variety of colors, styles and fabrics. A double breasted one is a little less versatile because it doesn’t look good hanging open and it’s tricky to wear if you’re busty. I’d keep the length just above the knee, preferably single breasted, belted and don’t go for beige if you’re fair skinned. Think about the fabrication too. Avoid linen and cotton because they crease uncontrollably. I adore the ink blue colour and feel it’s fresh and new. It’s perfect for Spring and Autumn when worn with different hues. Black is great because it’s smarter and works over a cocktail dress, but you might not have the need for this type of use frequently. A rich golden tan is lovely if you’re olive skinned and a brighter shade is fab if you love bright colours.

The BR style is a super choice even though its double breasted. It can be dressed up or down, worn classically, or with lots of spunk. Try it on and see how it fits. Let us know what you think.

Thanks for asking this question - I'm also looking to get my first trench and was wondering the same thing about the most practical color.

Angie, where would I look for a single breasted trench? I've hardly seen anything but double breasted out in the stores.

I am not a big JC Penney fan but there were two trench coats here that caught my eye. Neither are double breasted, but the color options are limited. One is only available in white or black, the other in tan or black. And they are both on sale.

You'll find Autumn trenches on sale and Spring trenches everywhere and single breasted styles few and far between. If you have a Zara or Nordstrom close by, try there. Macys is also good if you can stand it. Bebe usually has a good selection if that's your style.

It's too bad that we don't have Zara or Nordstrom here in Buffalo... As for Macy's where do they put their trench coats? I often find hard to shop in Macy's because of its setting and how they organize clothes--things don't have a clear order. I have just invented my own pun on how Macy's sounds like "messy." (haha)

I hear you. Macy's can be a challenge and they'll put their trenches everywhere. In the coat dept or within specific branded areas for both smart and casual lifestyles. Good luck!

I also like the BR trench in navy. It fits really well. But with all the dark wash jeans I wear, is it too much dark blue? I really wish they made the same coat in a kelly green.

I love the classic Burbbery beige trenches and am saving up for one.
However, beige is not my best color, I'm a typical 'summer' ( very fair skin with pink undertones, light blue eyes, dark blonde hair).

I've noticed that they come in whole range of beige shades, from very fair:

Which beige shade is going to wash me out the least? I tend to think the taupe one, but I could be wrong...

Sure Nicole. I've seen plenty of blue, but not light and not single breasted. We have a little while longer before the end of Spring trench season so give it a month or so.

I'd advise against the colour beige for a trench with your complexion Dancingstar. The only time that this colour will pop is if you wear a black or blue turtle neck under it. How about a rich cream with black buttons instead?

An Ink blue trench will operate a bit like a black trench pmhenson. Remember that it will pop again white or cream pants too. Perhaps BR will come out with a Kelly green one soon.

I'm on the lookout for a nice lightweight spring trench myself and I just happened upon a light blue, single breasted trench for sale on eBay for $12.99. The seller says it's mid-thigh length, but if you're tall it may be hip length for you. Here's the link:
