It makes me realize that I need to make time for a movie every now again. It used to be that I would at least have seen some of the animated/kid movies but alas, no more! I'll have to add these to my movie queue--which is getting bigger than my boot collection

I am not a movie buff - but Greg and I are very opinionated about what we think are four and five star movies. Most movies are one, two or three stars. Last years movies were pretty much mediocre apart from Life of Pi (see how opinionated I am).

Actually, I prefer stellar TV shows to movies these days. They seem to be so much more meaningful, deep and interesting. So now - I prefer the Golden Globes to the Oscars.

I sheepishly admit that I am a fan of one and two star movies. Movies that make me "think" or cry or tackle huge social issues just aren't entertainment for me. I can watch the evening news for that. I want action or something funny. Entertainment in my world takes me AWAY from the heavy issues; it doesn't delve deeper into them.

So what I am saying is that I haven't seen an Oscar nominated film in years. I worry enough about the world without having a movie encourage me. I'm no use whatsoever when it comes to "important" movies.

I love watching films & usually we try to see as many nominated as possible before our oscar party. this year--nada! I have so many to catch up on, but will most likely only see a few. It gets tough to balance busy schedules with the cost of films (in theater) etc....

we really enjoy seeing the animated shorts, one theater in town always has a night were they show them all together which is great!

Oh my, I feel awful. I haven't seen ANY of those films, and didn't even know most of them existed. I'm that unaware of current culture.

Oh, Angie, I agree with you on this year's movies but loved Life of Pi as a visual delight. We liked Gravity on IMax 3D but doubt it would be very compelling otherwise. Have you seen Nebraska? That one has stuck with me and is very real for a portrayal of small town western Midwest.

Caro, Cate walks on water in my world. I want to see Blue Jasmine - just for the name too - but I'm not generally a Woody Allen fan. Will see the movie soon though, because I have to see Cate.

Joy, still have to see Nebraska and Wolf of Wall Street. I always hope that the Veteran actors win the awards. Gravity was good, but I enjoyed American Hustle a lot more.

I don't have the energy for weighty movies. What I do for work exposes me to so much trauma and hardship that I need to escape to lightness and beauty. Silliness, rom coms, and fantasy are the genres I fancy. Last movie watched was 'Hobit II'. I am also mad for costume dramas and have a DVD collection of PBS stuff like the Austen series, Dicken's series, Gaskill, etc that I watch over and over. In my fantasy life I am Lady Edith from 'Downton Abbey'!

I think the only movie I went to last year that nominated was Gravity. And it gave me a nightmare.

Angie if you are not a fan of Woody Allen this is probably not the best film to see - dark, depressing but Cate portrays a character so from from her own persona it's amazing to watch & he always has great music

i only saw one of the movies nominated, american hustle. loved the fashions, liked the movie. i used to see every movie, but for some reason its one of those things that fell by the wayside as i got older.

American Hustle was fantastic…it deserves all the attention it's receiving. I haven't seen All Is Lost, but I'm surprised Robert Redford didn't get a nomination for it. I've heard his performance is amazing, and he carries the whole movie alone.

Caro, I love dark movies, and very weighty movies. All my favourite movies and TV shoes are dark and actually very violent. I am not a chic-flik gal. (I did not enjoy Sex and The City at all). Woody Allen movies - can't put my finger on it. It's like a flavour of tea that is not to my taste. But one can acquire the taste, right?

Anna, no more movies for you. Only fun operas.

Nancylee, Redford was nominated for a Globe, but did not win. It makes me sad. All actors over 80 should win because when are they going to win again?

I've only seen Wolf of Wall Street, Blue Jasmine and Gravity. I will try and see some others next week when I am in LA. I felt Wolf was far better than Gravity, and Blue Jasmine was good but it's been a while since I saw it. Wolf is super graphic -- drug use, profanity, sex, crime, no morals -- and done in an unrepentant, almost cheerful manner. There was a couple that walked out of the first scene which involved a prostitute, nudity, and an unorthodox drug delivery technique. It's almost as if Scorcese knew this, put that scene in first as a warning. If you can take this, stay for the ride. The couple was maybe in their 30s, there were many couples in their 70s or 80s who stayed through the whole thing, even laughed.

The only one I managed to see was Captain Phillips. This was not an entertaining movie at all but it did leave a deep impression and was worth seeing. We are so used to violence in the action movies that we don't see it as real but this true story of a cargo ship captain taken a hostage by the pirates was shown with such reality and force it was astonishing. No super heroes or supermen, just people who do the best they can in the situations which are forced upon them. I am glad that Barkhad Abdi was nominated or the Best Supporting Actor, he was really great portraying a pirate leader there.
I am putting some of the other movies on my "to watch" list now...

I was surprised at the number of films nominated...I thought it was always 5 for each category. I only saw 2 of the films- Gravity and American Hustle- and enjoyed both of them. I do want to see Blue Jasmine and the Wolf.

Susie, a couple of years ago they upped the number of possible best picture nominations from 5 to 10, but I'm pretty sure it's for just that category.

I've seen several of these, but I try my best to "save" watching them until 2 weeks prior to the Oscars ceremony. I have a tradition with several of my girlfriends that we all go to an Oscar Movie marathon that is presented in one of our local theaters. They start showing them on a Saturday at 10 a.m. and go straight through until midnight - and then the remaining 4 or 5 movies are shown the next weekend (same format - starting at 10 a.m. . . . ) It is crazy and fun and exhausting - but I wouldn't miss it for the world!

We saw American Hustle this weekend and really enjoyed it. It deserves it's nominations. The 70's fashions and music were fun.

For me, the Oscar nominations are more like a yearly list of must-see movies, so this weekend will be fun (and full). Haven't seen any of them yet, but my boyfriend did complain that Rush got no nominations. He made me watch it and I have to say Chris Hemsworth made it very bearable
