I was having a chat at work with a couple of the girls about clothing and style today. One of the girls I was talking is amazingly stylish, in a very Angie sort of way. She always looks fantastic and is definitely one of my style inspirations in my real world. I was so thrilled when she said today that she loves the way I dress. It's always so cool when someone whose style I respect compliments me on the way I dress.

What's the best sort of compliment you've received?

Yep, I agree. It's great to be complimented by people whose style I admire. The best compliment to date has been having someone who's extremely picky about the way they dress (read Mr. Jewell) say they like my style enough to let me pick clothes and put together outfits for them.

Hi Hil,

At a recent wedding, a male friend said I was looking my "Botticelli Best". Probably because of my wavy hair. (I wasn't naked or standing in a giant shell or anything ) I love art so I thought it was a cool and original compliment.

That was a lovely compliment Hill and rightly deserved. I do remember my pals saying how they thought I always look stylish. Can't recall any others at the moment.

Mine was at my wedding - a cousin known for her honestly and in-built BS detector said that I looked exactly as she would have pictured I would look as a bride, which I took to mean I looked like ME. Hope that doesn't sound conceited, but I think that is really the best compliment

I like it when I get more than one compliment on the same day, because then I know that the outfit (or a particular component) was a success. The other day, I wore a lime green scarf that I bought from BR, and I got two compliments while I was at the mall (SAs—and not from BR!). And yesterday I wore a new faux leather skater skirt to the mall and also got two unsolicited comments from SAs (again, not SAs where I bought the thing). That always makes me think the item is a keeper!

My husband has a tell tale sign that he's going to pay me a compliment. He stares at me with a goofy boy-in-love grin. He thinks I don't notice him staring, but it makes me blush every time.

What a wonderful compliment you received.

I like the subtle smiles from strangers I get when I am feeling pulled together. I also like when my friends ask me to sort out their closets. They try everything on and I say "yes" or "no". It's great fun and it feels good that they trust my judgement. I don't always get my outfits right but it's easy for me to see what is looking right on others.

That's a great compliment! It's always such a good feeling when someone whose style we appreciate or is very different from our own takes the time to give a kind word.

As someone whose style is rather quirky and eccentric (and who really just dresses for myself) there have been three compliments I've received over the years that still stand out in my mind...

Being told by a coworker that they loved my style and how you could really tell a lot about my personality and who I am from just my style, even without knowing me.
When the head of the entire Couture division in a billion-plus dollar a year ecommerce fashion company tells me regularly (when I worked with her) how much she loves my outfits and ultimately ended up saying she wanted to raid my closet and take everything in it I figured I must be doing something sorta right.
When another coworker, at a different company (not in the fashion field) actually wrote an unsolicited recommendation of me on LinkedIn that called out my business acumen, etc (all the usual LinkedIn recommendation stuff) but then actually put in the recommendation "in addition to being creative, fun, driven, committed, and truly passionate about her craft, Lynn also happens to be the best-dressed person everywhere she goes."

That one really cracked me up because it was so random, considering the context (but was just as appreciated as the other very kind things she had to say)!

That's great to hear Hil. I know that I must have lifted my game since finding YLF as a couple of times people I know at a club, who are not especially friends, have commented that I am always well dressed. But my favourite is when on two separate occasions total strangers have stopped me and complimented me on my outfit, same outfit both times too - must wear it more often!!

What a great thread!

A worker at our local coffee shop (a Tim Horton's) said my outfit made her happy. It was winter and my outer uniform was a grey coat and black boots and gloves, but I was a accessorizing with an orange leather bag, and ombré scarf that graduated from dark orange to sherbet.

Someone I see only every couple of years, a colleague who I don't even know that well and who isn't a flirty flattery type, told me that I look younger every time he sees me. This perception must be entirely due to style updates, as I definitely aged a lot (facially and weight gain) in my 30s. It was simply a great compliment, as well as nice reminder that I do have some control over the whole "it's all downhill from here" nature of ageing.

There is a young man at Church I have know him about 11 years now he is 17. Every sunday he gives me the most wonderful compliments. He said I was the most dapper woman he knew. He said he has the courage to dress dapper because he likes it despite what his friends say and he said what I wear gives him courage to do the same in spite of how other people may feel. This just made my day.

I know I'm not alone in that I love to give -- and receive -- compliments. It makes everyone feel good. I like the ones from random strangers who are obviously under no obligation to say anything at all to me, who go out of their way to comment on my shoes, jacket, haircut or whatever. I walk around our city a fair amount, and it's really nice that I hear comments even from strange men that are not creepy in the least, just appreciative that I'm wearing something nicer than sweats. But you are absolutely right that it's especially encouraging to hear something nice from a stylish person who doesn't have the same style as you. I get a kick out of the fact that my stepson's two best female friends, who are very edgy dressers and art school graduates in their 20s, admire my style.

The compliments that stick with me the most are not necessarily the ones about my clothes. One that stands out in my mind was when a former Project Runway contestant (her name escapes me now, she has a shop in San Diego and I met her there) complimented my skin, of all things! And our dear Angie, who has made such lovely comments about my eyes she makes me blush, but in the best possible way.

Compliments from my husband still make me feel wonderful. I texted him the pics of my outfit yesterday and he pronounced me "hot."

This weekend I was complimented at church. I was wearing an apple green and white toile skirt and green sweater (and sheer pale stockings!). It was the first time in months that I had worn a skirt, and someone said she liked my outfit, that I looked like Spring. She looked very nice herself, in navy polka dots, and I complimented her also.

My favorite compliment came from a secretary at the school where I used to work. Occasionally we had to wear union affiliation shirts, which were bright purple polo-style (men's sizing) with union logo. Once when I had belted mine over a black pencil skirt with a black ruffled cardigan over top, she said to me, "Only you could make a golf shirt look stylish."

That still warms my heart.
