The longwaisted thing (pic link edited)

Hi I am starting a new thread for this, though I asked it on my recent waistcoat question
A lot of people said that the waistcoat featured there seemd to fit. My point was that

"The belt doesn't hit at the right point on my waist - it get me on my rib cage, about an inch above my waist. It also flares out from that point.
This happens to me ALL the time with my long torso.

Here I am in a waistcoat from the 90's - rejected by YLF - but it does hit at the right spot

And was surprised when it said "enhanced the waist" because that waist would have been an empire line on me.

Anyway is all this anything to worry about? Maybe long torso-ed types like me should just wear the shorter top to visually shorten the look. Perhaps its just that after getting my waist back after pregnancies I don't want to hide it!

The first photo link doesn't work.

In the second one, it doesn't *look* like the ribbon isn't at your natural waist; it looks like it is hitting the smallest point of your torso, which is correct.

I haven't noticed in any of your photos that your waist appeared to be getting lost, it always looks emphasized. Can you post another link as an example?

I am assuming that "waist" is the part we bend from, underneath the rib cage etc. For me that runs just above my tummy button, about here

But lots of my dresses and tops ( and the waistcoat) belt or flare out from my rib cage at points that are kind of where the top is folded up in that picture.

Although there isn't all that much difference between my ribcage circumference and waist - perhaps 1-2 inches, unless I am really holding my tummy in!, I have quite prominent bottom ribs that stick out, which is perhaps not evident in the photos I have shown, so I kind of feel like a waistline at that point isn't doing me justice.

This is all clear in my own mind but perhaps I am not explaining it well enough?

Hmm....I think maybe you should keep looking for items that hit at your "natural" waist. I also have a long torso, and my "waist" is the same spot as yours is. This is also my smallest point. I have had some of the trouble you're talking about, but not too much, I have been able to find other things. The waistcoat issue, I understand, as I've had the most trouble with these. Have you tried looking for a more tailored, cropped style? I usually only have the flaring-too-soon problem with ones that I've tried that aren't like a suiting style, or that are supposed to be "long," but they aren't long enough on me, they hit in a weird place. I haven't had that trouble with the cropped versions, because those don't flare, since they are meant to be shorter. Does that make sense?

I didn't notice the flaring on the waistcoat that you had tried in the photo, though.

Hi anne, in my dress fitting class we did this exercise. Tape some butcher or architectual paper to a wall. Have someone make a pretty accurate outline of your body, giving points where your top of head, ears, and chin are, shoulders slope, shoulder bones (knobby bone) on outside, underarms, waist, hips and curve of hips, knees, smallest point of ankle, and crotch (so you can draw an outline of your legs), and a good line on the floor where your feet are standing. Lay the paper on a table and draw cross lines through the pertinent spots and lable them. Fold the paper so that you create cross sections that you can read to see how many heads high you are (8 is supposed to be typical), and how proportioned you are, by folding the paper on the table matching top of head to floor line and crease, fold in half again dividing your height into four equal sections. Bring hip fold to underarm fold to establish waist. Mark and lable these lines for comparison. Now you can see if your waist is long in comparrison to your legs. Supposedly the body is going to be in proportion to the fold lines.
In doing these exercises beware, we learn a little more about ourselves then we may want to know! Ha!

In my haste I wrote all that info, after re-reading your post I don't know if that is what you are looking for as it seems you already know that you are long waisted.
Anyway, you look fabulous and you have definately regained your waistline after pregnancies. I think you look great in all of the outfits. The only thing I might change is the vest seemed to have a very closed neckline, which is fine, but might be just a little better with a more open V neckline. This is probably just personal preference.

Hi Anne, I honestly think you can pull off both looks: I love how that B&W dress looks on you (it's gorgeous), but I love the belt over the red cardi just as much.
(by the way, I don't think I'm long-waisted at all, but lots of self-belts etc. also sit a little higher than my natural waist - I'm starting to think that's actually a good look for me - and I think that's just because I'm on the taller side).

That dress is SO GORGEOUS, Anne. It really doesn't matter that the waist sits higher than where it’s supposed to. You look fab.

Thanks Angie - I do appreciate that dress! I guess never would have thought (until people on YLF made comments when I first showed it) that that belt was supposed to be a waist belt - I had it categorized as a slightly lower empire. That dress if fitted below the belt anyway, so it is not perhaps a very good illustrustration of what I was talking about. I have several dress or tunics that have back ties around my rib cage, but not directly under the bust, kind of at the same level as your cobalt dress.

But one reason I was wanting to get a waistcoat was for the "corset effect" and I though that little diminished if it is flaring out when it should be nipping in.
