The famous Halogen skirt: Not for me

I finally broke down and sampled the NAS Halogen skirt in the Purple Nectar/Black color-blocked version: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ha.....sultback=0

Nope. In the smallest size, the hip line is too curvy for me.

You're not alone, April. I tried it last year and had the same problem. It just didn't flatter my shape at all.

We'll just have to look on and admire it on others!

I had mine altered to bring in the hip line. Made a world of difference.

I think they changed the fit slightly, on the fall 2012 version. I had to return mine too and I own four of these already. Why? It is beneath me!

FWW, I don't find this year's cut nearly as flattering. I have a problem with waists being too loose, and the old style fit me better. This year's fabrication is thinner so it doesn't smooth out those bumps and bulges nearly as well and isn't as flattering through the tummy. I kept the storm gray as I really needed a gray skirt, but the other skirts which were more *wants* than *needs* went back.

Last year, everyone said it ran large, so I didn't even bother. I knew the smallest size wouldn't work. This year they added a lower size so I caved, but still no go.

Una, I thought about altering, and if I had been able to get the solid Purple Nectar, I would have. But I don't love the color-blocked version enough to have it taken in. There is something about the shape of the panels that is not flattering on me.

April (or hopefully others who are less curvy)--do you happen to know how the Halogen skirt compares to the J.Crew no. 2 pencil? The J.Crew skirt fits my waist/hips well and I often have problems with too-large hip allowances; but I'd prefer a ponte knit for comfort since I only wear pencil skirts when I'm going to be sitting for long periods of time. I take a 2P in JC and have wondered about whether I'd be a 0P or 2P in the Halogen skirt, since it ran large previously.

This skirt didn't work for me in the old OR new cut! SO sad when saddlebags show through thick ponte knit as well as the lining... sigh...

I have to alter the old style one because the waist is too tight for me when the rest fits fine. I have not tried the newest version and frankly am tired of the alteration factor. I am quite happy with my red and blue versions but will likely look elsewhere for other colors (although I ache for the camel color recently released)

I think I'm one of the odd ones where both versions fit well. I can't wear a J. Crew skirt for anything though. Much too straight.

Sorry it didn't work out for you, April. They're a fantastic work staple.

I got free alterations on my halogen skirt a few years ago, I also had them lengthen it and make it more tapered like a real pencil skirt, no charge! The hip line was way too curvy.

Me too (or three). I get hip-wings, where my hips apparently ought to be. I am more of an X than an 8 in Imogen's shapes, and this skirt is all 8. KL, I love my J.Crew pencil skirts (I have . . . a lot of them) and I cannot wear the Halogen skirt of this year or any prior years (hip-wings even worse).

Hmm. This is something to keep in mind. I've kept the idea of the Halogen pencil skirt in the back of my mind, because I like pencil skirts (but don't currently need one) and everyone raves about the Halogen ones, but I'm pretty non-curvy, so it sounds like they won't fit me either.

Last year's were *perfect* on me. Had I known the fit was not kept consistent, I would have added another one or two. Sigh...
I have to go back to those No. 2 pencil skirts from Jcrew. I have not tried them in ages. I suspect they would be too narrow.

I'm not at all curvy and the older versions fit well, accommodating a large waist. Like Jean, I've had mine lengthened but didn't think to have them tapered. I will have to try that.

Zapotee, according to posts on Corporette the new version of the Halogen seamed pencil skirt is now cut similar to the J.Crew No. 2 pencil skirt. See comments:

Last year's version was also perfect on me and I love this skirt so I wish I had ordered more colors before the design and fabric hand was changed too.

MaryK felt that the new version was cut bigger in the waist and smaller in the hips and some commenters on Corporette felt the same, basically the new skirt is best on straighter rectangles than the hourglass shapes.

It's really too bad the Halogen changed the cut on this. It's nice that the less curvy gals could shop at J. Crew or Banana Republic. and those of us with hips and small waists could buy the Halogen pencil skirt. Now I don't know of any pencil skirt that will work for my figure

Interesting. I've found that both last year's skirt and this year's skirt work for me. But I'm wearing the petites and the waist/hip ratio/placement is very different between the petites and regular sizes in this skirt. Maybe they only changed the regular fit.
