The demise of the slip

Hi. The Wall Street Journal had an article today on the slip and the fact that no one wears them any more. I had been trying to find a short half slip since purging my closets of ankle length skirts and buying knee length ones. The clerk at Soma told me that young women don't even know what they are (they carry no slips). Is this really true? The article said no one is modest now and they "went the way of virginity", but there are other practical reasons for wearing a slip like fewer trips to the cleaners with your skirt or dress and keeping wool from being scratchy, etc. Does anyone here wear a slip?

Joy, I have been searching for slips, as well! Sometimes I want something under my dress or top/skirt combo, and shapers often give a really odd look. I do wear a Spanx skirt for a half slip, though, and it seems to work ok. Full slips are non-existent in Nordstrom.

For me, slips have nothing to do with modesty, but with clean lines and soft fabrics against the skin. Let's bring back the slip!

Joy, I was wondering the same thing a few months ago, when I was looking for a half slip to wear under a clingy dress. They totally seem to be out of fashion (but I'd really prefer wearing a slip to wearing shapewear!) I think Angie suggested that Target or Walmart (!) might have slips; I have not checked. If you find one, please let me know

I have a friend who says she wears slips under white skirts, but I feel like a lined skirt or dress is a lot more sensible and practical. I can't think of any occasion that I'd want to fuss with another undergarment, but then again I don't wear wool dresses. Funny though, I swear slips are still represented in movies and television as things that are still worn- I know the girls on Gossip Girl are shown wearing them. Then again, maybe it's because they're old money (wink). Anyway, the point is I find them too fussy, but I can see why others might wear them, for sure.

Lannie, they do wear lots of slips on Gossip Girl. I wonder if they will make a bit of a comeback as a result. When a fabric is clingy it can make a huge difference. If something is fully lined, they aren't really necessary. I found when I used to wear a lot of suits a full slip made the top look better, as well as the transition from top to skirt, if that makes any sense. They really can help with drape and flattery, but I understand why you'd find them a nuisance!

I do not own slips, but find the ideal incredibly sensual, as in movies from the 1940s and 1950s. But I am fundamentally a lazy person when it comes to dressing, so (and I'm embarrassed to admit this) I just wear the unlined dress, even if you can sort of see my (skin colored) undies underneath.

I have a half slip I bought at Macy's a few months ago. I am planning on wearing it under a sweater dress when I wear tights with it. How do people deal with that if they don't have a slip?

Thanks to Rose and Nicole for finding some slips. Our Target doesn't have any.
I love a slip or half slip with beautiful lace, something like a couple of those on barenecessities.com. It feels so decadent and sensual. Maybe part of the problem is that they started looking too cheap and unattractive.
This may be my first on-line attempt to purchase a clothing item!

I wear a negligee from Victoria's Secret under my sweater dress. It looks just like a full slip slip! It's red, the sweater dress is aubergine, so it works - probably better than a white slip. It definetly smooths out lumps and bumps and prevents the sweater dress from sticking to my panty hose (static cling).

In the "olden days" I used to have a whole wardrobe of slips of various lengths and types. It was a pain in the butt finding slips for each skirt length (particularly because I'm petite). You had to be precise or you would have a slip showing - which looked tacky and sloppy. But the slip was necessary because we all wore panty hose, and without one, skirts would have a tendency to cling unattractively to your hose.

Now that people rarely wear panty hose, I can see why slips disappeared. But with the return of the sweater dress worn with tights, they are necessary. If you have a victoria's secret negligee, try that first.

Thanks for the idea, Shiny! I actually don't have a VS negligee, but it sounds a lot more fun than wearing my ugly beige slip all day. I might have to go and have a look.

I wore a slip just the other day under my shirtdress because I felt I needed to smooth things out a bit. I thought my slip was a little too long and figured I'd look for another one on my next shopping trip. Good to know that I shouldn't waste my time at the stores I would have looked at I still have a drawer full of slips (half and full) from my high school days when my mother insisted that I wear them under dresses. I can still wear most of them, which is a miracle becasue I'm a far cry from my HS days body I'll definitely hold onto them a while now.

I'm actually going slightly crazy, because I found this fun clothing store which sold these funky "peekaboo" slips in dark, bold colors - basically, the hems were edged in nice laces and ribbons and you're meant to wear them juuuust a bit longer than your skirt for a bit of variety. I thought, "Well, that's cute and clever, but not quite my style - I don't have a single skirt or dress that would benefit from that!"

Of course, the next week I find this great denim minidress which would be *perfect* with a punky lace slip to offset the look (especially since it's the shortest dress I've ever owned), and I discover I forgot to bookmark the site.

I don't know - has anyone else heard of something like this? I know it sounds a little absurd, but I swear, it did look nice.

I like slips and wear them almost whenever I wear a skirt/dress (not often). If you don't find one at the sources others have suggested, you can also try the lingerie section of a department store-- my Macy's has slips. Or, do a google search for "modest clothing" and slip. There are many on-line clothing retailers focused on the modest segment. Some are dowdy, but others are more hip. I was introduced to several of these sites by a very chic Mormon friend and have ordered from one, shabby apple, as I need very modest, conservative clothing for work.

Ladies! Stop your searching. If you don't mind buying a second hand slip, then I have them, in sizes 34, 36, 38 & 40. I have them in almost every color under the sun. THEY ARE ALL IN EXCELLENT (top quality) CONDITION.
There are no stains, rips or pulls anywhere on the slips. Most are nylon, I have some in polyester or satin.

I personally love slips. I like how they feel when I wear them. Especially if it's cool out. A nylon slip gets so silky when it cool out and when you walk in that silkyness, it actually turns me on!
I also love the male attraction that I get when they see a little lace peaking out of the vent.
I dated a guy once who was totally turned on when he seen me in my fullslip for the first time. He said that it left so much more to the imagination.

Those types of slips that you are talking about are very popular in Japan! They are new, I haven't had the oportunity to see any in the states yet, but I will keep my eye out.
There are some really pretty slips that are new out there, but they are hard to find.
I perfer the vintage slips from the 70's & 80's. I think some of the sexiest slips ever made were made in that era.

I saw those slips in a magazine last month! Some even had rhinestones on them, I believe they interviewed the designer. Tomorrow I will dig through the pile of mags on the floor by my bed to find it and let you know.

i actually quite like slips i own a couple, both for practical reasons (slightly sheer clothing, etc) and because i quite like showing a pretty lace edge under a slightly shorter dress, heh. i look out for vintage or vintage-esque ones in thrift stores though...

I regularly wear slips with skirts/dresses, especially in the winter. Otherwise my skirt sticks to my tights!! I think slips are very practical. I've been sewing skirts, and have been lining them so I don't have to worry about my slip slipping below my hemline , since my shorter slip fell apart a couple of months ago (it was white, and not meant to be seen like some are).

The skirts + tights thing has been bugging me no end. My lined skirts are fine, but I wear skirts every day, have a few twill skirts, and... arrgh. I think it really is time to see if I can slip into (pun intended) my mother's full slips from the early 70s that are slim and short. I have two, black & lacy, tucked away in a drawer. Might work. If not, thank you all for pointing us to places we can buy slips. Whew!

I definitely am a fan of slips! I wore them growing up and have a few options in my drawer to help with certain dress or skirt outfits. I really would like to get a few newer, sexier ones though... it's nice to have that bit of 'interest' under one's clothing, just to know it's there!

I just bought a slip from a friend of mine that sells slips on Ebay. It arrived in the mail today. It's in Excellent Condition!
It's a beautiful pink half slip from the 80's. It's sooo pretty. I bought it from them because I was going to list it on my site, but it's so pretty, I think I'm just going to keep it and wear it. And the best thing is, I got it (including shipping) for under $10.00
I enjoy wearing slips so much, that I'll wear them even when I don't have to.

I love the idea of a full slip, but haven't found one that works on me and is in my price range. Most of them are fitted in the bust which just doesn't work, unless I buy it big enough that it hangs shapelessly on my body.

But for unlined dresses (and sometimes with my pencil skirts that have a slit in the back) I'll sometimes wear a half slip. It's a really cheap old one that was actually too long, so I hacked it off, but it smooths things out a bit and keeps me a little warmer.

I wear half slips often, and have never had a problem finding them at Target, of allplaces. I've found shorter and longer length. Maybe because I'm in the South?

And, yes, I am teased mercilessly, but I care not. TMI, but otherwise, my skirts, uh... "bunch" when I sit, causing an awkward and mildly mortifying adjustment when I stand. *ahem*

(Hope the link works it looks weird.). At any rate, I am slipless at present, since I mainly wear dresses only in the summer when I want to be cool. I also don't miss having to be constantly vigilant against having one's slip show, which seemed to be a mortal sin at the time.

I adore slips! They are pretty, sexy and feel amazing on your legs. They also help clingy cotton dresses drape better. I have bunches of them in different lengths in polyester and silk (VS used to sell awesome silk slips). Wearing a slip under a skirt is like secretly walking around in silky pj's! Love Shiny's solution of actually wearing a negligee!
