The danger of a really minimalist wardrobe...

We have discussed so many times what is the right size of a wardrobe and how nice it is ho have a minimalist wardrobe. Well, this week I was forced to be really happy that my own wardrobe is not extremely minimal!
This Sunday our washer failed to finish the wash cycle and displayed an error. My husband spent half of Monday trying to fix it without much success.
Today I called for service and they cannot come until next Tuesday!
If my wardrobe was really small that would be a tough call for me not to be able to do laundry for two weeks - and who knows when they can fix it if they need to order parts! As it stands now I have enough things in my closet to weather out this washer crisis

Forget me, my kids would be in real trouble - they seem to need 4 outfits a day washed.

Well, that's another perspective on the minimal wardrobe!

They really can't repair it until next Tuesday?! I would be beyond annoyed, if I were in your shoes. Good luck.

What Shevia said! With 5 kids I would have to go to the laundromat. But it's a point very well taken. Minimal only goes so far.

Wow! Yup, I would be in some serious difficulty, too. I guess I would be hand-washing quite a lot even as it is!

I know what you are saying. I on a not so minimal wardrobe still have the occasional laundry bottleneck!

Mind you, I'd be handwashing the blouses and underwear if it was only for me, and could probably get by. With kids I'd be going to the laundromat!

Ugh, I am sorry about your washer, and I am sorry they will take so long to figure things out. My washer took a break on me last year while my DH was on a business trip. I told him in no uncertain terms that I was NOT taking the kids out to do laundry, and that I'd have to buy socks and underwear for them at the very least. It turned out to be a simple fix that he took care of as soon as he got home, but it taught me to always have more "necessaries" on hand than I think I need!

I am glad you have a wardrobe that will carry you through until your washer is fixed!

Lol, you must live in France. The south of France, specifically.

OK, I know you don't, but my brother has some hilarious repair work stories from when he and his wife lived there. He said once you accept that they come on their own time, it's all good. (Although there was that one time the plumber hooked up something wrong in their bathroom and hot water filled the toilet bowl…apparently it's really hard to go when there's steam condensing on your bum).

Btw, can't you just take your clothes to a laundromat in a pinch?

Well this sounds like a great opportunity to wear non-favorite items, because favorites will already be in the wash. I'm always eyeballing ways to reduce my wardrobe size and I think how frequently one washes is a key factor in deciding how many clothes one needs.

You raise an interesting point. A minimal wardrobe does require more frequent washing of items, and they will wear out faster (IME as someone who has been quite minimal at times). Which can lead to greater stress around clothing because when say 1 of your 3 pairs of jeans is worn out or stained or lost or whatever, you are really running low and need a replacement quickly. That was my experience, that being super minimal caused me stress. My conclusion for me was that minimal was not easier, it was making my life harder. And I can see from ylf that to do it well requires quite a bit of work as well. I imagine that before I arrived at the perfect selection, something would need replacing.

I don't own my own washer and dryer, so I agree with you. If I had a minimal wardrobe, the clothes wouldn't be getting washed too often!

How frustrating! I think I tend to "pretend" I have a minimal wardrobe in that I wash all of our favorites often and then we immediately re-wear them instead of the other stuff in our closet. It would probably not be a bad thing if our washer went out as it would force us to delve into the second half of our wardrobe.

Thank you all for "get repaired quickly" wishes!
A trip to a laundromat may be a solution but it is time consumins, especially when I work full time and long hours and had to work on weekend. Having extra choice in my wardrobe is a much better solution for me and I was glad for this.
Now, I can weather over the clothing crisis but getting enough of clean towels maybe a real problem here...and they are hard to handwash! I hope I can manage until next Tuesday but if it is not fixed then a laudromat trip may be in the cards...

Her appartment building does have it, it would be my last resort. I think we can last until next Tuesday (fingers crossed).
The worst think about a laundromat is that you have to sit there and wait for the wash to finish (or drive back and forth). Then if I don't want to dry my clothes I need to haul them home wet...logistics are very annoying when you are used to do a laundry at home...
On the other hand if this is the biggest problem I am to face this month I will take it!
