Wow and they’re swarming! It’s the first time in ages that I feel I’ve really seen people and clothing. Indeed, everyone seems to be in straight legs, some wide legs, some balloon-y and all worn a little loose. Light washes, very little dark wash. Not so many showing ankle and not also knee (as in, they’re wearing shorts). High waists definitely.

Ok… so I wonder where everyone’s skinnies went?

Sweatshirts and tees on top… not tank tops or sleeveless. Clogs and sneakers (but not chucks).

Oh and for the grown… I’m starting to see the teal I’ve been waiting for and maximalist pattern. The young’uns are very plain… light blue, navy, light grey solids.

Haha - I wonder where the skinnies went?

It is fun to people watch.

Around here teens and early 20s seem to wear wide leg jeans, rugby jerseys or loose sweatshirts or maybe a fitted top (crop top or wrap top). Still lots of leggings though.

Hahaha, Cee! Rachylou, I’m noticing similar jeans and pants on my campus, for those students who aren’t wearing shorts in the heat. We’ll see if leggings are afoot when it cools down. Oh, and even if it’s 3 million degrees outside, lots of combat and other lug sole boots.

This could be a very useful thread for me. My son’s clothing issues were solved a few years ago when he found “his” sweatpants. Hollister was *the* source. Now those pants all have holes in them, he doesn’t want to support Hollister’s production methods, and he has to fit in on college campuses in a little over a week.
Of course, even if a thousand flowers bloom on this page and I learn details of dress on every college campus there is, that still doesn’t mean he’ll listen to me when it’s time to shop. I promise not to dress him in leggings.

Yep, skinnies definitely went the way of the dodo bird around these parts too over the last few months - especially the young people are all in wide/mom/boyfriend styles, and waists are high.

I wonder if there is "college/university" style, or if it really varies by university? Or if it depends where the students come from primarily?

I went to uni in Ottawa in the mid-90s, and when the Greyhound buses showed up after Christmas holidays, you could tell which one came from fashion-forward Montreal vs. then-not-very-fashion-forward Toronto ... one bus (mine haha) was full of messy scrunchie buns and leggings, the other with red lipstick, stylish hats, and heeled winter boots!

College students are back here too but it is still hot. I see lots of girls with really long hair in slinky sun dresses and heavy dark stompy boots.
Boys are mostly wearing those loose long nylon shorts like basketball players with tees or nylon tanks under flannel plaid shirts worn as jackets. A few look like they are dressed to go bouldering. The man buns are gone, shorter hair cuts.

Yup. I barely see skinnies here in downtown Seattle either, but on all people. Not just students. Jeans and pants are wider and looser. Wide crops, relaxed straight legs, barrel, bf jeans, tailored straight legs, and wide legs are on the street. I see leggings, shorts, dresses and skirts too.

First day of term today (for undergraduates, anyway). Lots of high waisted, light wash, straight & balloon leg jeans here too, though worn with tank tops or fitted tops.

I'm seeing t-shirts on guys rather than hoodies, though that might just be due to the weather (plenty of shorts & plaid skirts worn with rainboots for our typically wet & humid summer though, lol).

Also seeing lots of students standing in the way of lifts, doorways & stairwells as I'm trying to pass or grab lunch, but I digress...

The college kids are returning to our small campus and most of them are wearing some gear, a sign that they are still enjoying the beauty of the great outdoors, as they explore campus, the community and the national park.

I didn’t see any skirts/dresses yesterday. Maybe that’s because it was Tuesday. As in, you know, Friday is for looking cute

I live in a college town too and the kids just came back. I'm seeing some of the wide leg / balloon jeans on the girls, paired with crop tops/tanks. The boys are in the same butt ugly cargo shorts that male people everywhere seem to like.

I am definitely not with the trends in my skinnies. I really only see trends when I go into the city these days. I went back to university last year and have to admit I'm pretty slack at taking in what young people wear unless it really stands out. I should make more effort. I might end up more trendy.

So both my daughters started 11th grade yesterday. They both are wearing wide relaxed fit jeans lately, but DD2 reports "everyone" was wearing flares!

Ooh this is a good thread...being in my early 30s (I can still say that for another year then I'm mid to late *cries*) i'm still wanting to channel my inner 20s hahakeep reporting what's in. I have no idea haha

Rachylou, game over? What? I absolutely loved my 30s. Probably the best decade of my life, on all fronts. I mean, I have no idea what I did. fashion-wise, but then I think Sally is on the right track doing her own thing there and that fashion is ancillary to the rest of life.

slightly off topic, but does this mean I shouldn't take skinnies to Paris next week? I'm at western US university where it's a win if they're wearing actual clothes and not pajamas to class ...

Just back from BTS shopping with the offspring and had to share DDs first day outfit pick - I think she's captured the sartorial zeitgeist of the younger gen!

SW prof, you just gave me flashbacks to the campus where students regularly brought breakfast to my 9:30 lecture, and many of the young women apparently could not be bothered to pull their sweaters over their heads. They would stick their arms in the sleeves and pull them all the way up to the point when one might pop the back over one's head and pull it down, but they didn't do that. They just wore them on their arms and across their fronts, like a stripe highlighting the chest. Occasionally saw actual pjs, of the flannel button-front variety, but these highlighters were far more distracting to me. That's also the school where, when I instructed a student to put her cell phone away during class, she protested "but it's my ma-ahhhhhm".

Lol @SF this is one step further - I remember when I was doing my BSc, someone actually showed up in their DUVET to our lecture. As in, they had wrapped themselves up in their bedding & brought it with them to class.

Who needs an expensive down puffer coat, when you can just make yourself into a bedding burrito?

Helena yes I'm seeing that look a lot. Cropped tops baggy ripped trousers and white trainers. I'm not sure I can get away with my tummy showing nowadays so thought I could try full length tops with a cropped cardigan like the jacquemus ones. Maybe.
