I heard tonight on the news that Hudson’s Bay purchased Sak's for$2.4 billion. How do you think Sak's will change? I remember when Macy's bought Bloomingdale's, Bloomingdales changed a lot and I stopped ordering from them.

I remember when Macy's bought Marshall Field's. They have never been the same. : ( However, as far as Canadians in general go, I quite like them (Peter Jennings, William Shatner, Keanu Reeves, Neil Young, Dan Akroyd, etc.)

As a Canadian who has been frustrated with HBC as a store for many years, I am hoping that their acquisition of Sak's means that YOUR stores will stay awesome and OURS will improve in service and merchandise. Thus making it awesome for everyone everywhere!

Canada has not done well with department stores in recent decades (just google Eaton's or Ogilvy's sometime) so this could be very exciting. As I said on Nicole's thread, I also think its linked to the fact that Nordstrom is coming to Canada as well. HBC needs to up their game. Shannon posted that their website has already improved so this is good. We might be coming, but we're not exactly a threat Hopefully it's all good change!

I thought Hudson's Bay was bought by Americans in 2006 and then re-bought again by another American in 2008, so it is not a Canadian company anymore anyway.

HBC is now a publicly owned Canadian company:

"HBC is the oldest commercial corporation in North America.

In 2008, American private equity firm NRDC – owner’s of Lord & Taylor - bought the company. It returned to its Canadian roots when NRDC and its president, Richard Baker, made the company public on the Toronto Stock Exchange last year" (CBC)

What Danysedal and Suz said - it a nutshell. Hopefully HBC will up its game now. Reasonably good product but service has suffered over the years. But the sales can be awesome!

That's funny, I never thought about how Saks might change...I too hope it will just spread its awesomeness North. Suz, thanks for clarifying about Hbc. I did think it was US owned now.
