The boots from Yoox arrived...

They are SO SO beautiful - they actually look and feel in quality almost identical to the Gidigio boots, except in a perfect shade of brown. If I didn't know, I'd think they were the same make. I ordered a half-size up and they fit, so they run small.

BUT they are not easy to get on and off - for some stupid reason they are designed with a half-zip from the bottom, which means you still have to unbuckle them to get them on and off. And with my recent epiphany about the boots I ALREADY have and don't wear due to difficulty, I am going to have to send them back.

Wow you are SO good. Love your discipline! I'm sorry about the zipper, why do designers do that? Ugh.

It's crazy how similar they are to the Gidigios otherwise (also handmade in Italy!)... The brand is "Open Closed". Here are pictures, where you can see the silly zipper situation. Can't get my foot down the shaft at all without undoing all the buckles. ARGH!

Good grief! I can barely be bothered to tie my shoes. I couldn't stand to have to unbuckle those to get them on. That's beyond ridiculous in my opinion. Send them back. Perhaps they will re-engineer them with a full zip next year!

I think the reasoning behind half-zip boots is that you're supposed to be able to stuff your foot down the top half of the shaft without widening it... I have small enough feet that I've not had a problem with it to date, but I still ban myself from buying those styles because it's such a hassle (plus it's harder to straighten out pants if you're tucking).

I want them! (ok, I can't have them). I can get my foot through boots like this without unbuckling as my ankle is much smaller than my calf. So these boots are really made for people like me.

I applaud your decision to return them though. Way to be PPP.

Oh darn, they were so arr-matey-steampunky too! But Una, you have the *best* willpower to be giving them the marching orders --- fussing with getting them on would get my goat too. Down the plank with them...

Argh! NO! I see what you mean though, that would be a pain to undo the buckles each time. I'm sure you will find another pair that work better, with all your patience!

I have to undo the (two) buckles to get my foot in the Pliner boots. Four buckles--can see that being a dealbreaker. Silly non-functional half-zipper. Echoing all the others that you know what you can and won't work with. Next boot!

I have a pair of boots with a half zip, and Sylvie and KL are right - the idea is to get your foot through the shaft without having to unbuckle. That said, I have to say that those boots are a pain to wear (they require sitting down to put on, for one and I don't wear them as often as I could. Good for you for having the wisdom to know what is and isn't going to work and for having the willpower to send them back!

Ah Una, I dunno, I could deal with the two buckles, but I understand, these are your boots, not mine.
I think it would be hard to find a similar item though.
I'd give it a bit more thought.

Yep - I'm not going to be standing bent over for 15 minutes undoing a bunch of buckles so I can get my foot out of a pair of boots. They are fab looking but too high in the fuss factor.

Good for you for sticking with what you know works and doesn't work for your life!

I'm starting to move over toward Zap's bench. Yeah, I know fussing is a drag, but if the boots are otherwise perfect, you may want to consider how much time you're going to spend online searching for the next perfect pair? Is that not a different type of time suck? I don't know, you've got some valid points and they're your money and your possible hassle, but I'm playing devil's advocate here.

I mean, I understand if it's just a dealbreaker and there's no two ways about it. But most of our clothes have an element of a nuisance around them....if we're not willing to diet to fit into something, or take things to be altered, we're driving back and forth to the mall or FedEx to shop or to return a package....going to the dry-cleaners....getting into heavy online research...etc etc. Just for me, if the boots were absolutely lovely and felt like a dream on my feet, I'd be willing to put up with a few extra minutes getting them on and off. Or else, just keep searching.

Mochi, if I weren't taking three pairs of boots to the consgnment store (two thrifted but one very expensive) that have similar issues, I would be changing my mind. But every time I had to put these on I would be cursing, much like with the Frye Rorys.

And I have skinny calves and ankles, but high arches seem to make it hard to slip into boots this way for me.

Holding strong, unless a size 6 with more flexible feet wants to take them off my hands!

I hope you know I'm playing devil's advocate not because I want to go against the grain, but because I feel comfortable saying stuff like this to you. I happen to have met you IRL, and I know you would never take anything I said the wrong way. I have though become more careful with other threads. I tend to come off too strong. Sometimes people just want validation and that is what I'm giving from now on.

These would be just the ticket, but alas, they must go.

Not at all, Zap! I would hate for anyone to hold back on my account, and yes, you are an IRL friend as well as a YLFer! I had to sleep on it before I could really commit to sending them back, they are THAT lovely. But the Gidigio boots have set the standard - handcrafted boots can be this perfect AND be easy to wear.
