The Allsaints jacket - you call it!

ETA: IGNORE THE SHORTS, PLEASE! This is not styled, and I would never go out in public like this. If the photos are hidden, it may be because I am taking new ones in the morning.

So here is the jacket. It runs SMALL. I ordered two sizes, and the larger one fits my shoulders but is hard to close. The leather is very soft, almost like pleather, and the lining is cotton. The sleeves are too long but can be hemmed.

Here it is cropped (the bottom zips off easily), a view of the shoulder strappy thing, and not cropped, all without the belt because I was in too much of a hurry to fiddle around. I am going to let you tell me what you think before I review it and tell you my opinion because I don't want to bias anyone.

Sorry I'm in gear - we just got back from a hike. And a hat to get my hair out of the way of the neckline.

I love the look of the proportions on you of the shorter version in profile with the
leg of those ?pants. (but the pants from the front - oh no, look how they creep
up and into the groin)

Was just reading in Bazaar about a new cropped pea jacket with a longer skirt or
pant being a new (retro 70'a silhouette)

Vildy these are just hiking shorts - I pulled them up because the shirt is short and I didn't want my belly hanging out! Normally they are down around my hips. I guess I should have changed before taking photos to avoid camel toe. Ugh.

Oh, sorry, I knew you said it was gear and it wasn't strictly camel toe. A lot of comfy knit bottoms do that thingy, though, when we're not looking.

I am interested to know how you will wear it. I mean is it a casual piece, etc? There are elements I like but others I don't. Some aspects of the jacket are quite thick and chunky and that's what Im not so sure of. The shape and fit is really nice and I like both the cropped and non cropped version. It looks a bit like a biker jacket. I am probably no help here as I am quite conflicted and don't have a conclusive yay of nay on this one.

Looking forward to hearing your assessment.

Una, I think the jacket is killer, but please let's do see it styled as you would wear it so we can be sure that the fit will be okay.

Also, question - how many months of the year can you wear leather jackets in Alaska? Where I live a LOT of people own them, but I've always found them surprisingly unusable for much of the year. They are nowhere near warm enough in winter. And way, way too hot in summer. They work for about a six week window, maybe even a FOUR week window, two or three weeks in autumn, and two or three weeks in spring.

Having said that, I do see some people wearing them all summer in the evenings. So some of this depends on one's personal temperature gauge. And I am sure Alaska summers are not hot and humid like ours, so it might be a half the year item for you.

Maybe that's not a consideration, but I know for me it's something I think about.

I really like it on you! Very RATE! You said it's hard to close - how hard? Can we see a pic with it closed? Or will you never wear it that way, so it doesn't really matter?

Una, how is the sleeve length? On the bigger size, are they too long? Hard to tell from the photos. It is a definite RATE jacket. Very cool. Oh, and can you wear it under a coat in colder weather? i.e. is the leather lightweight enough? I could see you getting a lot of use from it that way.

Oh, I reallllly like it! Especially long, as it gives you a nice waist. I also like that it is not a moto; I think it makes for an unexpected twist.

How hard is it to close? Is that a deal breaker?

Oh good lord, I'm having a hard time breathing, I love it so much on you... would you ever wear it closed? Seriously it looks great open. I thought I would like the cropped version, but maybe because it's unstyled, I prefer the long version. The only thing that gives me pause is the sleeve length... when you say it is too long, could you live with it as is or would you need to get it tailored? Leather alterations can be pricey and difficult. Can you take it to a tailor to find out if it would be possible or worth doing before you make a final decision?

I like it a lot, but I'd like to see it closed... I think as long as you can close it, the tightness is probably OK since leather will stretch a little bit in any case.

The long sleeves don't bother me since I prefer jackets with longer sleeves anyway; if they do bother you, however, you might want to think twice since I don't think that's an easy/cheap alteration, what with the jacket being leather and all.

It is a cool jacket to be sure! I prefer it long also (maybe it's just the freshness of the longer length). I think it has the RATE style that you 'll enjoy (duh - or you wouldn't have ordered it!)

If the sleeves don't have zippers, the shortening/hemming should be straightforward, but what about those straps? Do they need to be moved, or . . . ?

How is the fit through the armpits? Your photos can't show every detail, but there was one that made me wonder if the jacket was tight up in the armpit .

If you went up one size, you could close it, but does that matter? I figure if it's outerwear it should close well. If it's inside wear, it'll stay open.

Una, I like the biker vibe, but I'll leave it to the professionals to comment on the fit. Did you prefer pleather to the real thing?

I do like it... seems to fit you nicely, but is it going to be worth the cost of alterations on the sleeve length?
For me, not being able to zip a jacket is never a deal breaker, but it might be for your climate...

I like it cropped and edgy. It's okay full length, but doesn't give off the same bad ass vibe as cropped does

To answer your questions...

Suz, I could wear this in spring, summer or fall here. It will not be a winter jacket. You and Deb are absolutely right that I need to find time to create some real outfits.

I will post some photos of it closed. I think that would only be with the longer length - the cropped length feels better open..

No one seems to have mentioned my concern which is whether the shoulder straps make me look more IT.

If I could find a jacket like this in good pleather, I'd be just as happy (and richer). Have yet to see anything.

My take: I adore it cropped - it looks smaller here than it feels. It has some give and is not stiff. I am not as sure about the longer length, and need to see if I can find ways to wear it. The sleeves have no accoutrements and should be easy to shorten up to the wrist straps - but I need to see how much that will cost.

Una, to answer your IT question, I think the epaulets actually make your shoulders look narrower than usual, because they are placed inward of the actual shoulder seams.

Excited to see the outfits you come up with. I think the longer length would be a nice way to edge up a simple jeans outfit.

I kind of love it. It does look like a biker jacket, ie, visually bulky, and I'd want to wear something sleek underneath it to balance it out. I really like that you can wear it cropped as well as long.

Bulkiness concerns me. However, I have yet to find a leather jacket that I like that does not add some bulk.

Una, I don't think it makes you look more IT. Especially not the longer version which gives the waist definition.

It's a REALLY interesting jacket and I am hoping that you'll be able to style it in ways that make you want to keep it!

I forgot to mention the EPAULETS. I love that look! I have a pleather jacket and I regret it. I love how it looks but always wish for something that is real, with all of the connotations of a real iconic leather jacket, the authenticity and integrity... a reminder of all those who wore leather jackets before me... Jack Nicholson, James Dean, Janis Joplin, Iggy Pop, Slash, my dad... you just aren't going to get that with pleather. I've had a real leather blazer for over 20 years and it has only gotten better with age. Sorry I am gushing slightly. If you can't tell I love this jacket on you.

the longer length looks way better. the shoulders don't seem too big, but the picture is not too clear. if you feel the shoulders look weird you should return it.

I like it! I think for this style, you don't want it to be super fitted and tight anyway; the looseness looks good to me. Both lengths look good to me as well, that cropped length will be fun with dresses. Do try it on with some sweaters/tees/whatever you'll be wearing underneath it and make sure that the bulkiness is still OK.

I like this, but do you think you will really wear it both long and short? Or just short? I think I would tire of the zipper in the middle and eventually it would make me yearn for a real longer length leather jacket rather than a 2-in-1 piece. In other words, keep it if you're happy with it just as a short, unzipped piece.
