Here’s a write-up about an event I attended at REI last week, asking for customer input about Plus-sized fitness gear. Representatives from REI, Columbia, and Brooks were there to listen to us, and also share info about how their products are made and designed. I was surprised to hear about the complex design and testing involved in Brooks bras takes place whenever they introduce a new size to their sports bra range, or that currently, REI is eating the cost of getting brands to carry more plus sized offerings in their store. The main point was to listen to us-how we shop, how our bodies differ, what our pain points are, how do we make do when we can’t find what we need, what we wish was done differently.

Mirna Valerio, author of A Beautiful Work in Progress and blogger at Fatgirlrunning, attended as a guest speaker, and she was delightful. She talked about the importance of visibility - of being a person who doesn’t LOOK like your average runner or yogi or athlete who is nevertheless getting out there and doing something challenging. (It was so fun to meet her, and I’d recommend her blog and book as well.)
