Tell me, what turns an outfit into instant holiday attire?

For an upcoming article, I'm hoping to write about taking an outfit from special occasion to holiday special occasion. Joy had a few good ideas:

-- add a red satin ribbon as a belt
-- use her mom's rhinestone necklaces from the 50s
-- add a holiday brooch

Any other brainstorms? What can you add to an existing outfit in your closet that just screams "holiday" to you?

You mean besides candy-cane earrings and a large embroidered Christmas tree?

*Red velvet or satin - picture the type of ribbon you'd use to tie a bow on a wreath or Christmas tree, and then utilize that color somewhere in the outfit
*Winter white coat or sweater
*My great-aunt's snowflake brooch is one of my favorite festive wintertime additions to a wool coat

Take a several pearl bracelets and tie a metallic or red ribbon around them.
Edited to add: if you have an old rhinestone necklace wrap your bracelets with it.

Velvet, sequins, rich jewel toned fabric (not necessarily red). Diamantes, lace, jewelled decorative shoes.

I like Mac's idea of included underwear as part of your look.

Also - raindeer antlers!

Rich textures! For holiday parties I love wearing just one color in various textures...velvet, lace, sequins. All of the above. Shine is important, too.

agreed with the rich textures! I never have any super fancy holiday things to go to so i usually pair a more casual dress with sparkly statement jewelry and fun makeup.
