Opaline, omg!!! That's ridiculous!
My mom had nothing good to say about my style from approximately age 13 - 25 - too much black, not feminine enough, not enough skirts, things didn't fit right, wasn't enough like [insert random person to compare me to here] ... bless her, I stayed true to myself, but I do think it took a toll confidence-wise. Nowadays her comments are generally kinder, and when she's not into something, she does her best to keep it to herself.
My husband thinks I dress way too conservatively! He has learned to keep his opinions to himself though. And DD has plenty to say, although she always affirms my right to dress how I feel best
Other than that, I don't get too many comments - I think I'm pretty simple and non-controversial in my choices generally!
I try extremely hard to support my family, friends and kids' fashion choices, recognizing that it goes so far beyond clothes and into an expression of who they are as people. With my kids, if I think they are making a mistake (e.g. colours don't work together or something), I might say, 'traditionally, those colours aren't worn together" or something - then leave them to their choice. As long as they know the convention and dress respectfully to the occasion, they are free to wear what they please and I'll always find something to love about their choices.
