I'm thinking about fall and feeling really drawn to taupe, camel, light browns etc. (preferably cool-toned), but I'm not seeing a lot of them in stores/online. Anyone have any pieces they would recommend?
I like taupe and find it more face- flattering than black and navy. However I have trouble building wardrobe around if because there are so many different shades that it tends not to be a neutral for me, but a " color"- like a taupe sweater that I could wear with either black or navy bottoms. I don't seem to be able to mix it with other fall browns.
I just looked in my closet and noticed almost no brown of any shade--and brown is my main neutral. You can't buy what they're not selling. I hope it's true the tide is turning from grays to browns. I'm ready to stock up.
Oh, I don't know if they have taupe, but Nic + Zoe is one of the few lines I've found that does any shade of brown at all.
I've also been craving taupe, well actually, camel -- but resisting it with all my might. Because it doesn't flatter, or work well with my wardrobe, so I fear it'll wind up being an orphan.
Instead I'm loving the "new" olive.... which works with my eye color, and plays like a neutral.
Also I'm having incredible luck with inky blue this season!
Shiny -- I just bought a ton of olive for the same reason: it literally matches my hazel eyes. In fact if the browns don't show up in stores pretty soon, olive is going to be my main neutral this winter.
I love taupe. I loved it better when my hair was still blonde, but it still works even with my grey hair if it is cool enough. I consider tan to be a warm neutral; taupe to be its cooler cousin.
It's often difficult to find except in booties and bags. I have a taupe pant suit. (The actual colour is closer to the way the pants look in the photos). I also own a few items with taupe in the pattern. These are all at least 4 years old.
Seems like the only two taupe things I've found in the past few years have been booties and a handbag! I did get a taupe cashmere sweater a couple years ago and love the color but don't get to wear it much. I wonder why this color is so elusive? Maybe it is hard to get right in the dye process?
I know!! I really love it as a neutral but wow is it elusive!! I had a taupe knit skirt at one time...and I guess I have a taupe patterned tube skirt (just remembered it now because I intend to wear it tomorrow!)
It can be super flattering on cool toned blondes and redheads and works pretty well with grey or white hair too. Also good on brunettes with cool skin. So I don't get why it is so hard to find!
I, too, would like to see, buy and wear more taupe and other cool browns. I just bought a taupe skirt with some lurex in it. And I love my taupe & offwhite & grey leopard print coatigan, which I wear year round, my taupe & grey leopard print platform booties, and my short necklace with small taupe pearls, which is a gift from dear old friends.
I too am with you on feeling drawn to taupe and light - cool-toned - browns, Laura, I but don't have a single item in those colours in my wardrobe;-) I think they can look very elegant and chic. And it would be a fun change.
Here are some things I've found. And fingers crossed more will pop up as Fall merchandise hits the stores.
I haven't seen much taupe in stores, but after I initially read this post earlier I noticed a woman at the grocery store today who was wearing a taupe jacket and carrying a taupe bag. It's gotta be out there somewhere!
Ah, it's the Starfish Slouchy Turtleneck in taupe, which for some reason I can't seem to collect (will ask Greg about it). I'm adding a screenshot and if you type in Starfish Slouchy Turtleneck, the website should show the result.

Texstyle - I completely forgot to mention that I already have this top in blue and in grey, and am very happy with it. It looks good on, drapes nicely, is easy to wash etc.
I wash them in the delicate cycle on cold, texstyle, and they come out great. No shrinkage etc. I don't tumble-dry though, just hang to dry, and usually I don't even need to iron them.
By the way, I also own a taupe blazer, bought 2016 at H&M. It is soft and comfortable and doesn't wrinkle. A great item for traveling, and easy to combine with many other colours. I don't used it in summer (when I wear my white or light grey blazers, or none at all), but I have worn it a lot in fall, winter and spring.
Diitto what Suz and texstyle said about booties and bags.....but now I have to browse that extensive list inge just posted - thanks inge! I've started looking for darker browns too and they are also elusive except in sporty brands.
Hope it changes soon but not holding my breath
