Talk to me about this dark red color in stores

I love red so I was thrilled at all the posts featuring dark red. I was at the mall yesterday and was checking some of the featured items in person. I was surprised to discover that I would not have described most of the items as "dark red." Some were a "muddy" burgundy." Some were almost brown.

I think the term "dark red" confuses me. I was expecting something totally different (and red). I would not have categorized the few pieces I saw yesterday as a red. I was wondering if dark red really describes burgundies and browns? Or if I didn't look at enough pieces to form a true opinion?

I think Angie mentioned that it's coming out in a range of tones this fall -- everything from a bright cool cranberry to a muddy burgundy. So I'd say, just hunt for the ones that you enjoy wearing and forget the rest!

What stores did you visit?

I'll bet a lot of it hasn't hit the stores quite yet -- but will show up more in the next week or two.

Thanks for your response, Suz. I was at Banana Republic. I wanted to hit more stores, but it had been a long week and I suddenly felt tired and just wanted to go home.

I have mostly seen the color in shoes so far in stores and agree that most looked like a brownish burgundy. I suspect that we will see more as more fall and winter things arrive.

That's odd. I haven't seen the muddy burgandy--instead I have seen clear deep, dark red. But then, I hve been in plus size shops--or plus size departments and maybe they don't carry the really trendy shade?
The first is from ON (and my K/R post) The second from reitman's. Both bought in the last two weeks.

Yes, I have to admit that I never thought of the colour of the items Angie featured as 'dark red'. To me red is mostly a cool colour, and I don't wear it.... I do wear warmer versions: tomato red (my one exception to not wearing red!), reddish brown, burgundy, etc. No cranberry or other cool reds for me.
Some of my burgundy stuff from last year seems to fit the current bill, some is definitely more purple-y (I'll still wear it, I just see how it is different). I hope the shade you crave makes an appearance!

My take on this is aligned with Suz's. I see it as a range of tones and depths in colour. Take what you like and what works for you, and then go from there. I have hardly seen anything in true fall colours yet in stores, and Winnipeg is a decently large city. Not getting a feel yet for what colours will be prominent except for in the lower price range shoe store Aldo - which is super trend conscious. Burgundy and taupe boots were represented. Still not much navy anywhere. Banana R has been a real disappointment so far this season.

Burgundy is a red with brown or black in it so it does qualify as a dark red. To me any clear red that has brown or black added to make it darker is a dark red. It can go by many names.

Did you Shannon's post with her dark red EF items? This is what I think of when we say dark red. Some of the pieces I have seen online would be what I call burgundy, but it looks like their will be variety in this colour way so we have the opportunity to find which tone suits us;)
